I applied on Craigslist and got contacted for an 'entry level management' position. That is almost always a red flag. The company claimed that they had expanded from North Carolina. I always do research before taking an interview and when I Googled the 'HR Director', Kellie Britton, the first thing that came up was a mugshot and she's only 21. I was wondering how someone barely out of school got a position as HR Director and did some more digging and found out she is the girlfriend of the CEO, Tony Berardo. The 'CEO' is only around 25 and he used to work for another popular ripoff company - Viable Concepts Inc. that was operating out of Cassleberry, FL. I also looked at the Carolina Concepts Group Inc. website and everything about it just screamed 'scam' with stock photos and only vague descriptions of exactly what they do. They only spent 7 months in North Carolina and I'm guessing they moved because people started to catch wind of the scam.
They claim to be a full service sports and entertainment marketing agency. I was told by Kellie Britton that because I don't have experience in all their areas, that is the reason I would be starting in entry level management. This raised a flag for me since I have nearly 10 years of experience in integrated marketing communications. This indicated to me that she did not even properly review my resume, she was just giving me a generic sales pitch.
The interview process follows the same line as these scams - first interview where they are 'really impressed and blown away' and a second interview is scheduled almost immediately. The second interview is driving around and trying to peddle their services to unwilling people. They try to draw you in by saying it's sports and entertainment marketing and it's exciting. They mention clients like the Miami Marlins to entice you but fail to reveal that what you'll be doing is trying to sell season passes. Even the picture of Tony Berardo on the company's facebook page shows him holding a booklet that says '2013 Ticket Plans'. Don't waste your time (or gas) by interviewing or responding to these people.
