I am writing this letter in regards to my pet, Lady Ruff. When I brought her into their facility on August 26, 2006, approximately 7:45 p.m. she was not able to walk on her own, and I was advised that she had a very high fever and was dehydrated. The facility began to put ice packs around Lady to attempt to break her 102 temperature.
I came in the back while they were working on her to see how her condition was. I was told that the fee would be $200 to $400 because a considerable amount of procedures were needed to diagnosis her condition.
I later came back into the examination room to see what the condition of my pet and was told that she had a seizure and was given Valium. While I was back there one of the worker that was providing care for my pet was trying to find a pulse. I had asked at that time was my pet dying and I was told yes. My question is why was my pet still being treated, when the staff assistances knew she was dying.
However, within the hour, Dr. Melissa informed me that more testes would be needed and could possibly cost multiples of thousands of dollars. I questioning her at that time to ensure I understood what she was saying and quoted' to her, are you was saying it could cost me $4, 000.00 or more and at that time Dr Melissa, said yes.
I was in totally shock more so because no one was able to give me a prognosis for my pet, or any treatment otpions, just more testes, which had no guarantee on her life.
Therefore I had to make the most difficult decision anyone can ever make for a pet that is a beloved companion. Although the decision was demanded by humanitarian obligation, which was traumatic for me.
It was perhaps the ultimate heartbreak that I must be willing to endure for my adored companion animal. Aside from being the right thing to do, euthanasia can be a psychological nightmare of confusion, guilt and final responsibility, so I agreeded to have my pet, Lady euthanasia so she would not suffer anymore then what she had already endured.
The decision of when to euthanize is as individual and personal as you and your pet are. This is a judgment that only I could make, which involved great personal courage and sacrifice.
After making the decision, one of the staff came out to inform me that Lady was dying and did I still wish to go head and have her euthanize , I advise them to do so, as I did not want to see my pet suffer anymore.
The point that I am trying to make is I feel that both the staff and doctor were well aware that my pet was dying and charged me an excess dollar amount on the behalf of the Michigan Veterinary Specialists office.
I do not want you to be deceive as if I wrote a bad check because I did not. After putting much thought into the situation thinking about how the staff and assistances knew my pet was passing, but still attempting to run more test. I feel I was charged an inappropriated amount.
I do understand I have an obligation to pay and I am willing to pay, but only some of the cost. I do not feel that I should be obligatied to pay the full $1,069.00, with no explanation to how or why my pet died, as your staff was well aware that Lady was dying already.
Sincerely,
Sharon

I felted that the ER I took my pet to should have been experience, and not making educated guesses. However, in my case an educated guess was not even mentioned.

I am sorry that you lost your dog. I have unexpectedly lost a dog after taking him to the ER and it's a horrible experience.
I have had 2 of my dogs in emergency care on 3 separate occasions. The facility I used was excellent, but I can understand how someone can get lost during the experience.
First - ANY ER care is going to be expensive (especially the larger the pet is). You can expect to easily spend a few hundred dollars on something simple. The 3 visits my dogs have totaled well over $10,000... credit card bills we are STILL paying off.
Second - please realize that they may not have known what was wrong with your pet. They were making an educated guess based on symptoms she was showing and results to tests as they could run them. Some things cannot be diagnosed very quickly. What they try to do is stablize the animal while trying to diagnose them. Some things are easier to diagnose than others. If the animal is going downhill quicker than you can treat/diagnose, you can lose them. They are going to keep working on the animal until either there is nothing more that can be done, or until you give permission to euthanize.
Third - anything that cost a substantial amount of money should have been run by you first either in verbal or written form. It sounds like they verbally got permission from you to continue treatment. The staff at the ER I took my dogs to were very open with me about what they wanted to do and got my permission. They gave me different options to try to keep the cost down (barium series to start vs exploratory surgery for a possible obstruction). Anything that cost a lot (x-rays, ultrasound, hospitialzation, etc) needed an signed estimate from me.
Fourth - did you request a necropsy? That can be a beneficial tool in finding out what was wrong. There may have been something going on that they couldn't see - cancer, etc.
Again, I'm very sorry for your loss, but it doesn't sounds like an unreasonable amount given the circumstances and the fact that it sounds like they were getting verbal permission from you for treatment.
