Because the check is counterfeit or forged.  Once it comes back as bad the bank will reverse the deposit.  Since this was a new account they may consider this fraud on your part.  If that happens  the best thing that will happen to you is that they report you to ChexSystems making it impossible to open another account at a regular bank for several years.  The worst that will happen is that they will turn it over to the local police fraud unit and you may be charged with a few major felonies.  So if you did go to the bank you may want to go to them first and let them know that you found out the check is bad and what do you need to do to make sure it does not effect you.

There is no one to "go after".  Because the number they gave you to call was a "Throw-Away" cell phone that is untraceable.  They want you to send money through Western Union..again untraceable.  The names they gave you are fake..so say it with me..untraceable.  If they gave you an address the location actually is either a vacant lot or the company there has no knowlege of this other "company"..so one more time..it is untraceable.  Oh and did I mention that they are actually in Canada or another foreign country.

What you should have done is either just shread the check, or turn it into the police yourself.  Again, they probably wouldn't have done anything with it but enough of them may give them something to look at.

You know the check is bogus and you deposited it anyway?   The bank will eventually notify you that the check is bad, but there have been cases where they called the cops and reported the depositer for trying to pass a forged check.   Be careful!
