On Oct. 25th, 2008, a sales person of Micron Filtration Technologies Inc. arrived at my home to tell me about a product. My in-laws and spouse were present during her presentation. I had been ill that day and my in-laws were there to help my spouse prepare for my son's 6th birthday party, so things were a little crazy that day. I was impressed by the product but hesitant because of the cost. Shannon informed us that if for any reason we were unhappy with the filtration machine or vacuum we could return it within one year of the purchase. That was a great incentive; however, the cost was still scary for us. She told us your company had a 0% interest rate for a year and a low interest rate after one year. I asked her what the interest rate was and she said, a low rate, around 6-8%. There was no other finance information disclosed.

She told me she needed to run my credit but I told her there was a fraud alert on my social security number and she could not run it. I told her never mind, and she said she would call her manager. She called someone on the phone, who informed her they could by-pass the approval and asked if I knew my credit rating. I told her I had a credit check taken a month ago and the rate was somewhere between 690 705. I was not exactly sure but believed it to be right. She said, with that great credit score it should be no problem getting the 0% for a year. I asked her specifically what the rate would be afterwards and she said, About 6-8% most likely. I trusted her. The phone rang and I spoke to a finance company verifying my information. I specifically asked the person over the phone to verify the rate after the first year and the finance company said they did not know and that Micron, your company, would be the ones to provide the rate; therefore, I had no option but to trust her.

As I mentioned earlier my family was preparing for a party and I was not feeling good, so I was trying to get her out of my house so my family could finish preparing the party and I could go lay down. I signed some documents without reading them because I trusted your sales person. I figured I would read everything once I felt better, which was a couple days later.
The sales person gave me a hand full of items and I took it all upstairs, placing it all together in a stack on my desk.

A few days later, when I felt better, I reviewed the documents and noticed the 3-day policy. I could not believe it! I went to my spouse and in-laws and asked them if I heard Shannon wrong. My spouse, and mother-in-law verified they witnessed Shannon telling us all that we could try the vacuum and filter out for one year. My husband said that was what sold him on the unit and my mother-in-law said she heard Shannon say it a few times in her presentation. I felt we had been scammed. I also looked through all the documents Shannon gave us and there were no finance papers. I never received a copy of the finance agreement or any terms regarding the financing. I assumed she forgot; therefore, mail me the copy but she never did.

I was unable to discover the interest rate until November 7th, when I received a letter from the finance company, GE, which disclosed the interest rate. That was 13 days later. I was very upset when I realized I had been taken advantage of. I immediately called for the manager. I tried telling the manager my story. She basically told me she would talk to her sales people to remind them of the rules. Then she mentioned that the same thing happened to her with Wicks. The manager also said that, everyone knows that interest after a year of no interest is always very high so the finance company can try to regain their interest back. I told the manager that I am not a finance specialist and I am not everyone. I told her that I believed my sales person. She recommended I pay what I can and take advantage of the zero interest for the year and just transfer the balance to a low interest rate card after the introductory period. I was not happy.

I felt I had no other recourse but to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I noticed when I was on BBB that Micron Filtration Technologies have had 18 complaints within the last 36 months and 12 complaints within the last year. I do not feel Micron cares about their customers and are allowing their sales people to say whatever they want just to get a sale; and then deny any responsibility for it.

I did finally receive a copy of my finance agreement from Micron Filtration Technologies Inc. on November 18th. The manager mailed copies of the documents to me. She included the financial agreement I signed but the agreement did not disclose the terms or interest rate at the time of sale. The disclosures were sent to me from the company almost a month later.

It is my understanding that it is against the law to not provide a copy of the credit agreement, rather than just verbally telling me, like your salesperson did. The copy I received regarding the interest rate was the letter from GE on November 7th. I signed a couple of documents and trusted my salesperson to provide me all copies of the signed documents. I did not have time to review the documents at the time of sale because of my ill situation and my son's party preparation.

The manager offered, in her rebuttal in the BBB report, to send me a copy in the mail after the fact! The salesperson and finance team failed to supply me, the customer, with all required documents to make an informed decision within the three-day time frame. I may not have read over the cancellation portion of the receipt because I was going off the salesperson's verbal agreement, however, a verbal agreement is just as legal as a written document, especially when I have two other individuals as witnesses. These witnesses are willing to validate my claim.

I am writing this letter because I feel that my rights as a consumer have been violated. I honestly love the products but after the way I have been lied to and treated I would rather return the vacuum and filter than keep them. I do not feel my sales person, deserves the commission for this sale for her dishonesty and failing to provide me with honest and adequate information. This sale was made under false pretenses.

I have sent a letter regarding this issue to the CEO of Micron Filtration Technologies Inc. and he refuses to accept any responsibility, claiming this is all my problem.

I also have sent a letter to GE disputing the purchase. This is pending.

I also will be sending a complaint letter to the Attorney General's office.

In response to your claim:

Micron Filtration Technologies Inc. Is very saddened to hear about your unhappy with your independent contractor (Shannon). We at Micron Filtration believe that customers are #1, and we pride ourselves in following correct sales practices. We have taken considerable actions, under our code of ethics, to remove Shannon from our business environment. We have also considerably changed our hiring practices to ensure we have the highest quality people representing our product and our company. We are pleased to hear you own the product and the product works wonderfully for you. Hopefully you will benefit from our wonderful system as well as our impeccable service technicians.

As for your interest rate. We are in no way able to control finance company interest rates. We abide by all sales laws and practices (federal and state) and in no way would violate our customers trust as well as the law.

We have been in business over 12 years with a database of over 75,000 happy customers. We also have had many individuals work for us over those 12 years who realize their dreams and goals in selling a high quality cleaning system. Please do not allow one bad apple to sour the rest of our wonderful customers and employees.

Sincerely,

Micron Filtration Technologies Inc.

Business laws are designed to protect businesses from being ripped off from consumers that are mentally impaired, ie. intoxicated. You should have asked Shannon to post pone the appointment until you were able to provide your full attention to the matter. Signing a legal document when you are sick, tired or distracted is legal but unwise on the consumers part. Micron Filtration has the legal right to pursue payment from you. You also have the right to take Shannon to civil court but without any written claims from Shannon you probably wouldn't win the case. Since you are happy with the product you should consider this a lesson learned and you and Micron Filtration both win. As with any negative experience, share this story with your friends and that is how Micron Filtration will learn their lesson from a lack of sales or a bad reputation. This is how consumerism works.
