I called to get an estimate of the cost of an average Brake job. I was told $450 for 4 wheels replacing rotors and pads. I took the car in. The manager called in the evening and told me he had seen the car and he could do all the repairs for $1500 or just the minimum repairs for $940. I authorized the $940. The next morning he called again and spoke with my son telling him about how bad it REALLY was and told him that the car couldn't be put back on the road for less than $1100. It is my sons car so he authorized the repair. When I went to pick up the car and pay, I asked to see the parts, and a detailed breakdown of parts and labor. I was shown less than 1/2 the old parts and given conflicting stories for charges on the invoice. Midas advertises ASE certified techs, but they do not use ASE standards for Labor cost and job time frame. The invoice reflected 33% more time and 25% higher labor rates than any comparable shop in this geographic area. THe parts were charges at retail + 10 to 25%. When I asked how a $450 brake job became $110, I was told they replaced 2 Calipers. The price on their invoice showed $60 a pice for the calipers. I aske why the cost was roughly $600 more and was told the labor for changing the calipers.

I could not budge the manager I was talking to and legally had no ability to refuse payment. I have complained and was refered to a General Manager. He has been insulting, and intractable. I ended my conversation with him saying he would check with the manager about our conversation and get back to me. It has been 2 days and he has not contacted me.

I have complained by phone to the Midas Corporat Hotline, and by EMail. Further I have made several statements of fact on Facebook, and coppied them to messages on the Midas Facebook page. Comments on my facebokk posts so far have brought stories of others being gouged by Midas stores other places in the US and comments from certified mechanics as to usual cost fot ther work done.
