Mister Sparky This company is dishonest. I hired them to install an electrical outlet for an air conditioner. I was told that my panel box needed to be fixed and the company made it seem like I had unsafe conditions in my home. They charged me $8000. I also paid $350. for a permit and 6 weeks later I found myself trying to get anyone on the phone to answer the question " what happened to my permit" I finally called the town I live in only to find out they never applied for a permit. The office kept shuffeling me around and would not answer this simple question. They were extremely evasive and proceeded to tell me they have 6 months to aplly for this permit. If this was true why not just answer the question why avoid my calls. I am now thinking that the company took advantage of the fact I needed this work done and did unnecessary work to my home, for a outragous price. Shame on me I should have read all the other reviews that state they did the same to them. BUYER BEWARE THIS COMPANY IS DISHONEST. Pompano Florida

You are right to be concerned

AUTHOR: FloridaNative - (United States)

I'm in Florida not far from you and you are completely right to be concerned.

You need to have a permit on the work done. You paid for it. I assume it is in your contract with the electrical contractor. Check your contract now. Do some research on the remedies you have available to you. If I were in your shoes I would give the contractor one more chance to pull that permit immediatel. Send the contractor a letter in writting per the notice provision in your contract giving him X days to pull the permit and if he fails to respond to you within that time period then you will need to take your own steps to get a permit and the inspections and report this contractor to every relavent agency in Florida.

What are the long term consequences?

The building department can fine you - a huge amount. Daily.

The building department can also report you to code enforcement for a violation.

There are also negative consequences with your homeowners insurance company. Insurance company's look for a way out of paying any type of claim and if you have even a claim unrelated to your wiring, the HOI can deny your claim.

The homeowners insurance co you have can even drop you. Or refuse to give you the proper insurance credits on your 4 point report if your home exceeds 30 years.

There are also consequences when you sell your property as you would have to disclose unpermitted work which has a negative effect on your sales price.

There is a remedy if Mister Sparky refuses to get the permit, but you would need to have another licensed and insured electrical contractor help you. Contact your building department to see what steps you would need to do to cure this in the event Mister Sparky doesn't pull the permit.
