On our home telephone we received two messages a couple of weeks apart asking us to call 1-800-509-1071 and enter a confirmation number given on the recording. The message said that this was regarding a "personal financial matter", that it involved a debt that we owed, and that we would not be speaking with a lawyer.

The language in the message was as vague as it was designed to intimidate. My spouse made the mistake of calling and verifying the last four of the Social Security number they read off, and then further confirmed that we were not living in a certain city.

When I found out I realized this was a scam and I called the number demanding information. The clerk "Joanna" with whom I spoke was very defensive when I asked for a website and for the name and address of the company who had contacted us, and she hung up when I let her know I've reported them to several agencies

NEVER give out your information to people who call you. These people obviously had a couple sets of information on people and were trying to match up the right SSNs with the right addresses and people. Go to http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/con_steps.htm
