Mid-December 2010: I had purchased a brown Italian leather sofa with chaise from "modernlinefurniture.com". The cost was approximately $1,600.00. Approximately 2 weeks later I had received the sofa set at my home here in South Dakota. Upon arrival I proceeded to open the packaging on the chaise portion of the sectional. While opening the packaging it became very apparent that the chaise was broken into over 100 pieces. At this point I did not continue to unpackage the sofa portion, but instead called "modernlinefurniture.com" to ask for return instructions and a refund. I had spoken with "Nancy" at "modernlinefurniture.com" claims department, in New Jersey, who informed me that they had previous issues with this particular sofa being weak and breaking during shipping. After 4 or 5 long-distance phone calls, Nancy eventually offered to resolve the issue by refunding $400.00 in addition to sending me a matching, hardwood reinforced, chaise to replace the broken one. I was instructed to dispose of the broken chaise. I had informed Nancy that this suggestion would not suffice because I would be leaving for a 6 month stay in Thailand in a few days. Nancy responded that it would not be an issue to set aside the chaise and ship it to me upon my return home. Due to time constraints I reluctantly agreed to this under the condition that I reserve the right to a refund if there was a problem with the replacement and that the agreement be put in writing. Nancy agreed and sent it in writing, via Email.

Fast Forward 6 months: A week prior to leaving Thailand, I had emailed modernlinefurniture.com claims department to notify them that I would soon be returning home to the U.S.. I received a response from a woman named Julie who informed me that Nancy no longer worked there. Therefore I had to reiterate and send Julie the previous Email correspondences between Nancy and I.  I received no definitive response until after I flew home and contacted Julie again. Eventually, Julie agreed to send the replacement chaise under the pre-arranged conditions modernlinefurniture.com and I had agreed upon.

Fast Forward two weeks: I receive the chaise package and ask the delivery driver to allow me to inspect the furniture prior to his departing. He agreed. Upon opening the chaise it is immediately noticed that the chaise does not match the sofa. The "Hardwood furniture-grade reinforcement" was not there, but instead modernlinefurniture.com sent a chaise that had the hardwood veneered plywood removed and replaced with cheap MDF board coated in bright white melamine. The hardwear was attached with scraps of raw plywood. Also, in addition, the brown Italian leather cushions had multiple holes in them that were obvious manufacturing defects. The delivery driver noted the wrong color and the holes in the leather on the delivery receipt and I immediately contacted Julie at the claims department for modernlinefurniture.com.

Fast Forward two days: I finally receive a response from Julie at the claims department. She claims she has spoken with her manager and the response is that they will not honor their written agreement and refund my money. The stated reason was that "it had been too long". I agreed that it had been too long since they had been paid without them delivering the product I had paid them for.

Fast Forward to today: I, now, have in my garage (1) shattered chaise, (1) non-matching chaise with holes in the leather, and (1) untouched, still packaged, sofa. The set does not match and has many defects.... and I am out over $1,200.00. I would not only NOT recommend doing business with modernlinefurniture.com, but would seriously caution anyone considering a furniture purchase not to consider modernlinefurniture.com as an option. You may, likely, end up with cheap, defect ridden, non-matching, redneck rigged, furniture instead of the high-dollar, hardwood veneer, Italian leather, furniture you paid for as advertised... And remember, modernlinefurniture.com will not honor the agreements it has put in writing. This company is a scam and will waste a significant amount of your time and energy... and money for furniture that ultimately belongs in a landfill.

Please, see correspondences below for verification of what I claim:

In Dec. 2010, I bought a sofa/chaise sectional from "Modernline" and
when it arrived the chaise portion was destroyed. Apparently, that
particular sofa had been discontinued but  I was guaranteed that
another chaise section would be, furniture grade reinforced, and set
aside to be shipped to me when I arrived back from overseas. I have
now returned and would like to either complete our transaction under
our pre-arranged terms or return the, still packaged, sofa portion to
recieve a full refund. Either option is acceptable to me. Please, just
let me know how we should proceed. In the event that the reinforced
chaise portion is available and will be sent, please, send me a
shipping confirmation number and an idea of when to expect arrival.
Thanks for your time and help.

Regards,

Jared

P.S.  I have included a string of emails below that will give you an
idea of what's going on.

Hello Nancy,

Thanks for taking the time to write. I am doing fine, here in
Thailand. I do not expect to return to the U.S. until late June or
early July of this year. Once I arrive back home I will be certain to
contact you, immediately, to arrange shipping. If any issue should
arise, please, feel free to contact me again. In the meantime, I hope
this Email finds you well and happy. Thank you, again, for
demonstrating good customer service and diligence. It is appreciated.
You are an asset to your company... and you're a pretty cool lady, as
well. Until next time, take care!

Regards,

Jared

Nancy,

I have made it home in one piece. I suppose now would be as good of a
time as any to send the sofa to me. Please, just send me a
confirmation so I know when to expect the sofas arrival. I'll let you
know if any further issues arise, but hopefully everything will arrive
in tip-top condition. Thanks for all of your help thus far. Yer' a
good egg! :)

Regards,

Jared
