This JUST happened to me.
I was looking for a used beetle on autotrader.com, and came across an 07 VW convertible with only 9200 miles on it for $9000. It seemed a bit too good to be true, so I emailed the seller. This is what I got back:
Hello,
Thank you for your interest about my car. Sorry for the delayed response, but I'm in Glasgow (Scotland) right now and I have been very busy. The total price of the 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle is $9,000.00USD . THIS IS MY LAST PRICE. I'll not negociate the price. The car is registered and located in United States. I want to keep the car for me, but I cannot register it here, as it is made for the USA market, according to US standards. So, I decided to sell it.
A few words about the car:
-2007 Volkswagen New Beetle
-Mileage: 9184
-Automatic
-Title is clean.
-Engine: 4 Cylinder
-Exterior: White
-Interior: White
-VIN#3VWFF31Y67M421840
The car is like new, in perfect conditions, accident free, no scratches, no special marks, no need for additional repairs what so ever. A genuine road runner ready to be yours, but only if you shall understand and you won't make me loose time as it has already happened to me.
If you have any question please don't hesitate to reply.
Thank you again for your interest.
That's the EXACT same email as many others are getting from this scammer!! I didn't know it at the time however, and figured it was some foreigner who didn't realize that they were selling the car for dirt cheap, or this person really needed to get rid of the car quick. So I emailed back, asking to see the car before I made my decision. The reply:
Hello,
As I told you in my first e-mail, I am in Scotland, United Kingdom with my work. Before leaving US I had prearranged the deal with MoneyBookers.com so my presence in US isn't necessary. The car is in their warehouse ready for delivery. You have 10 days to test and inspect the car. So if you want to make this deal I need the following details from you:
*Full name and address
*Shipping address
*Phone #
After I will have all this details I will forward them to MoneyBookers and I will proceed the order. MoneyBookers will contact you with all the details that you need to complete this deal and also to see that i am covered by them and that I am legit seller.
Waiting your email with the requested details.
Regards!
Again, THIS EMAIL IS THE EXACT SAME AS THE ONE MANY OTHERS HAVE RECEIVED. The scammer apparently only changes the car make and model. Before sending my info, I google searched moneybookers, and it seemed legit. So I gave my name and address. Good thing I typed my address wrong (lol) by accident because I searched moneybookers.com later from a different search engine and a link to this site and one of the other reports on this scam came up. So I hurried up and broke the arrangement, reported the fraud to autotrader.com, and posted this report. Hopefully this person can be stopped, and soon.
I was getting emails from a Linda Barry (lindabarry49@hotmail.com) and her phone number listed on autotrader was 856-998-0038.
Hope this helps catch the scammer.
