RIPOFF!!!!! My Condensate Pump failed after only 3 years (new construction) and MTB Mechanical charged me $399 to replace. It took the technician about 30 minutes to install. When I went online to see how long units should last, I was surprised to learn that this unit could be purchased for $32.50! When I called MTB Mechanical to ask why the cost was so high for a $32 item, I was told by Jimmy that this was b/c of all his other cost concerns (cost to stock item, labor warranty, etc). I'm sorry, but $367 for a 30 minute install??? Thats about $735/hr!!!! And on top of this, this was their 2nd visit to fix this problem. I paid $89 the first time when the problem was diagnosed as a GFI switch issue. On second visit (and after GFI was replaced), it was determined (and written on report) that the GFI switch was tripped DUE to a faulty condensation unit. So, I refused to pay an additional $89 svc charge, and it was waived. But they actually wanted $488 for a 30 minute install of a $32 part. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!

Still overpriced...

And as far as researching things in advance, that's hard to do when your heat goes out in the middle of the winter. I understand about stocking parts, labor, overhead and all other costs associated with running a business. I run my own business and have an MBA, so this isn't just coming from some ignorant idiot, but there is something to be said for companies that charge reasonable fees for a reasonable amount of time spent - to build goodwill from customers, who not only do not post complaints about your company, but who refer you to their friends, family, and colleagues. I have I have already warned many friends and neighbors about your company and glad to say they have heeded my advice.

Setting the record straight

Thank you for your comments concerning the cost of replacing your condensate pump. Many customers look online these days to find the price of parts that service providers replace for them and have the same reaction that you did. What you do not find online is the cost to the contractor to deliver a highly trained, certified technician to your home who is technically trained, drug tested, background checked, covered by licenses and insurance. The technician is in a vehicle loaded with inventory, dispatched by a support staff in the office who took all your information when you called in requesting service.

Our company wants to ensure that you, the homeowner, stays safe and the work is performed immediately to the highest standards with a guarantee. The price you were quoted and agreed to pay prior to the work being done is the published price for the service and repair, not just the part.

I have went through the same things, if you live near Charlotte area, use smaller name businesses, they have lower over head and don't have to charge an arm and a leg, I have been using the same small company for years, Google them, Aircare 2 Maintenance; the owner always comes out to fix the problem promptly.

$32.50 for the part.

And $366.50 for knowing where to put it.  Sounds about right.  Folks today are used to the throw away culture.  Don't fix it throw it away and buy a new one.  I remember when you brought your TV to a repair shop and when you went back for it a couple of days later you would be given a bill for $98 dollars and a small 10 cent part would be taped to the top of the set showing which part was replaced.  You were just glad to have your set back and working.
Do you know how to replace a condensate pump?

Another one

Why in the world don't people do all the fancy Internet searches and research BEFORE agreeing to get a job done.  They wait until the problem is solved and THEN do research that they think shows where you can buy the exact same part for mere pennies and after watching the expert replace it, how it only takes a couple minutes to install it.

I suggest buying the parts and installing them yourself next time.

Nothing wrong with the company at all.

And no, I don't know anything about the company, in fact I never heard of them before this silly report.

Service is not free

The thought that everything should be free is causing the decline of Amreica. If you think this mark up is excessive you should never go out to eat, buy a car, purchase food, or participate in any monitary transactions at all.

The cost to do business is factored in all aspects of life. The wonderful thing about living in this country is you have choices.
