I have purchased a 2006 Toyota Corolla LE from Muller's Woodfield Acura dealer in Feb 2009. On the advertisement sheet posted on the car, it stated there is cruise control in the car. The car broke down with half year with transmission leak and engine problem, we took it to the auto repair, they tell us there is no cruise control and the car is in a bad shape. Then we found out the manual book in the car is 2005, so we are going to take the car to the Toyota dealer to check if the car is 2006 or 2005.

We contacted the Acura dealership about the problem of the car, they said that they don't know if the warranty of the car is still vaild, they can't check it out. Regarding to the false advertisement on the cruise control, they told me that it's not their problem, it's advertisement company's fault and there is nothing they can do.

I am outraged by the inresponsible response from them and the quality of the car they sell.

You are incorrect. Acura is part of Honda, you are thinking of Lexus.

Vehicles: Play it safe!

First, to Tony (the second one, not the first).. The parent company of Acura is HONDA, not Toyota. Also, I don't see what your rebuttal has to do with the complaint of the OP at all.

Next, to the first Tony, you were buying a used car. Despite everything you are told about a used car, take nothing at face value. Have ANY used vehicle checked out by an independent, unbiased third party mechanic. Look to, perhaps, a car clinic run by a major, national chain, such as Esso Car Care who will do a 101 point inspection for about $40. If a car dealer will NOT allow this, walk away. It means they may have something to hide.

If you decide to purchase a car with or without that independent inspection, the first thing you should do is have the routine maintainance applied for the mileage indicated on the odometer as soon as possible by a reputable shop. Problems that were not apparent at the time of purchase may be exposed at that time, and may give you recourse if the vehicle has been misrepresented by the dealership. Speaking of...

I don't agree with the previous poster regarding the cruise control, and this is why; the publication that ran the ad didn't just make up the features. they didn't send someone out to cherry pick units off the lot and list the features they thought were on the car. Someone at the dealership had to submit the information for the ad copy, thus the dealership IS responsible for the claims made in that ad. Ergo, the dealership is responsible for ensuring that the features listed are included on the vehicle in question.

HOWEVER, I do agree with the poster that it should have been pretty obvious that the cruise control was missing... After all, the activation switch is right there on the turn signal arm, so how could you have really missed it?

Again, make sure you know what you are supposed to be getting, make sure that what you're getting is in correct functioning order via an inspection, if anything is faulty you can either say no to the car, or wrangle the dealer into a lower price, based on the estimate for repair of the faulty system/part. Again, if they won't allow an unbiased third party inspection, RUN, do NOT walk, off the lot and do not do business with that dealership.

Might be an idea to check with the BBB prior to dealing with or closing the deal with any dealership.

Missing Cruise Control

AUTHOR: Jack Drawhorne - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, August 03, 2009

Caveat Emptor - let the buyer beware.

Tony, do you believe everything you read in the papers and in a paid advertisement? If so, I have several things for sale, in good shape and all exactly as you dreamed they would be.

1. Just because the ad said there was a cruise control, did you not think to look for the cruise control when you test drove the car before purchase, and did you not test the cruise control to make sure it worked? If you didn't - don't complain now.

2. Did you put gas in the car after you took it off the lot? Of course you did, otherwise you couldn't have driven it for a half a year without a break down. Did you check and change the oil after you bought it? Have the air filter and gas filters changed? Do the regular maintenance that all cars need? If not, was the breakdown related to lack of maintenance? When the oil is changed on a hydraulic rack, the technician notes things such as transmission leaks. Plus, such leaks are noticeable on the ground when you move your car. Or was it related to the fact that all cars eventually have wear and break down and used cars are even more susceptible to break downs? Cars break down - whether or not the warranty is any good was your responsibility when you bought the car - and it is VERY unlikely that it has any warrranty left. But if it does, only a Toyota dealer is expert in Toyota matters.

The only irresponsiblity here is you - you bought a car without properly checking it or its warranty out. You failed to keep a check on a car that you knew was used and therefore might have problems. You are asking a used car outlet that is not expert (and should not be expected to be) in that brand to do what only a dealer of that brand can do.

Tony, leave the Acura guys alone, go to a Toyota dealership and while there, ask the Service Manager to instruct you on how to shop for a car and how to maintain a car.
