I have to report what happened to a patient in our office after he got mad at us for not "taking an insurance" he said he was told "we were contracted with".

National Alliance offers "discount medical plans"; not major medical insurance. The patient told me to call the 888 ph.#. I did and told the man who answered who I was, what Dr's office I was calling from and why would they tell our patient we were "contracted". He said "because you are", and hung up. Hit redial... another guy answers, and says "well, you have to be contracted. Please wait while I check".... he hung up. Hit redial again.... another man answered; was rather polite about the issue until I said "what resources do you use that says my Dr's contracted? I know we aren't, but the patient is mad at us about it", to which the guy says "he's mad at you guys! HAHAHA...." and he hangs up.

I called the patient and told him about the phone calls, which he asked me to make in the first place. He was shocked. He called them, and was told "oh, yes, your doctor's contracted", and gave the name "Kenneth". Then I called, asked for Kenneth, got transfered, and asked the same question "why.... what resources..." and he says "by me? I'm not Kenneth, lady, and if you're going to accuse us of giving false information, I suggest you question your patient again (I said I had)... then you'd better look at yourself in the mirror before you call here again and accuse us of anything again..." I told him he should do the same, after he said he no idea what www.naaus.org was or what was on it...

I decided to call again later, and posed as "interested in applying". I was told (by the first man who's voice I recognized) that it was $299.00 a month for a couple. I asked "which insurance company is this thru?" Well, he can't tell me that, because "we need all of your information first". When I asked SPECIFICALLY IF THIS WAS MAJOR MEDICAL INSURANCE AND NOT A DISCOUNT MEDICAL PLAN, he was "that's correct. It's medical insurance."

I informed our patient of this; he was upset, but now it was at National Alliance of Associations. I found in his "Member's Benefit Booklet" where it
SPECFICIALLY SAYS " THIS IS NOT MEDICAL INSURANCE..." but that's not what the 'agent' told me when I called to "inquire what this is"... Also shown was "How to Request a Refund", which the patient will be doing.

I felt I had to share this.

This is direct from NAA's own web site:

"Q. So what is the answer to this growing problem for those trapped in the Health Care Crisis?

A. Well, if someone finds themselves trapped in the middle of either not being able to afford traditional major medical insurance, or not able to qualify for insurance because of pre-existing conditions then the alternative is to participate in one of the Association Benefit Programs like the National Alliance of Associations that allows you to purchase your health care at Managed Care or Discounted Prices. These are the reduced prices that traditional insurance companies pay the doctors and hospitals. Some of these Associations like NAA have additional Defined Scheduled Medical Reimbursement Policies that are underwritten by some of the largest insurance companies in the country. These policies are only available to the members of Associations like NAA. These policies are not Major Medical, but have many insured benefits to help those who find themselves without Major Medical insurance. These policies can include benefits like: Accident Benefits up to $10,000. per accident, Daily Hospital Benefits up to $1,000. per day for 31 days, ICU/CCU Benefits of up to $2,000. per day for 30 days, Physician Office Visit Benefits of up to $75.00 per visit, and Surgery Benefits of up to $4,000., just to mention a few.

The real benefit of joining one of these Associations is that they have additional consumer and lifestyle benefits as well like: Identity Theft Protection, Roadside Assistance, Shopping Services and many more valuable benefits for the members. The key to finding a program to fit your need is to look for a company that has been in business a long time assisting people with these kinds of savings. A good track record with feature driven benefits is the key when looking for alternative health care solutions in today's market."

----------

So, we see this is not Major Medical coverage but in fact another discount plan. No negotiated contracts, no hold harmless agreements, it is "alternative heatlh care".

Reply to Mr. Duvall

AUTHOR: Jan - (U.S.A.)

The 3 physicians I work for are NOT contracted with the PPO network of Beech Street providers, the network I was told "yes you're contracted with them" when I called the 888#. I've been in this office for 20 years; these Drs. have never signed a contract with Beech Street. Our street address is 243 March St. 93060; there are nephrologists at the dialysis center down the street from us at 253, but you'll not find my pediatrician employer at beechstreet.com because he's not contracted.

Maybe a real insurance plan is provided through National Alliance of Associations as well as the discount plans , but that did not appear to be what our patient and his family had signed up for after reviewing his "benefits" online with his permission.

I will say, with respect National Alliance, that the insurance companies and provider networks have become so entangled with buy-outs and mergers in the past 20 years, that it's becoming more difficult to keep straight which contracted company's name has been changed to something else. But the one thing I know for sure: there is no Beech Street participating network provider contract on file for any Dr. at 243 March St.

Also, with respect to National Alliance & Mr. Duvall, if the men I spoke with at the 888#, as provided to me by our patient, were at an "independent" office, I would think you'd be upset with them as well, because their attitude has reflected negativley on National Alliance of Associations.

To your good health,

Jan

False and Incorrect Posting

AUTHOR: Richard Duvall - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 30, 2007

As an employee of national Alliance I find this posting to be false, and factually incorrect. The author was at no time speaking to the National Alliance of Associations but rather a independant telephone enrollment center. Had the doctors representative contacted the numbers on the patients ID card, she would in fact found that they were a participating provider with the PPO network that National Alliance contracts with for their association members. She also would have been FUULY and ACCURATELY educated and informed on how the members Insurance program worked. It is truly "defined" medical insurance. All association members whether or not the enroll into the defined medical plan also receive discount benefits but most enjoy the fine medical coverages the author of this false report did not take the time to investigate before posting false and incorrect information regarding National Alliance of Associations. If she had a bad experience with someone else, report them as she never spoke directly to National Alliance.
