National City charges their customers ridiculous non sufficient fund fee's (NSF.)
I recently had 15 items pending on my account. The 12 pending items brought my account to a negative status.
Because the 15 items were not yet posted on the account, and were only pending, National City does not charge any NSF fees until the items are posted on the account. In order to avoid the 15 $34 NSF fees, I went and made a cash deposit that posted on my account immediately, and therefore brought my account to a positive status. When I made the cash deposit, I asked the clerk if I would be charged any of the NSF fee's, but she told me that because I made a cash deposit, the cash was going to be credited to my account immediately, and I should not be charges any fees.
After midnight on the same day, a check posted on my account, which was larger than all the smaller items that were on my pending items. National City paid the larger transaction, and charged me 15 NSF fee's for all the smaller transactions.
Had the clerk told me about the pending $190 check, I would of just made a larger deposit, but instead now got charged 15 $34 fees. They also could of told me that I had a check pending.
I always do balance my check book, but I over looked 1 check, and instead got charged $510 in fees.
I contacted the bank and begged them to credit me the fees or any, but instead they told me that they sympathized with me, but could do nothing for me.
This is just disgusting how they treat their customers, and how they couldn't refund me any fees.
I've had friends that National City has refunded fees to just because they have a lot of money with the bank. How can they just charge someone over $500 in fees when in fact nothing was showing pending on my account.
I TRULY HATE THIS BANK AND SUGGEST YOU LOOK AT OTHER BANKS FOR ANY OF YOUR BANKING NEEDS!!!

Posting of Items is Fee-Related
AUTHOR: 20+ Years In Banking - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Monday, October 20, 2008
I have been in banking for over 20 years. The posting of items is directly related to generating fee income; anyone in-the-know at Nat City would confirm that. CS is advised to use the "we assume your largest items are most important" line as it is more customer-friendly than, "we are sticking it to you to generate fee income." An in-depth analysis of the balance sheet
Now, having said that, it is certainly the customer's responsibility to maintain an active account balance in their register and it is not the bank's fault if the customer makes an error. Notice that I said error... it does happen.
This bank touts the importance of their customers and the customers' loyalty as adding to their strength, but yet, when Nat City sits poised and prepared to ask the government for financial aid from the bailout, it is unwilling to acknowledge that customers sometimes inadvertently OD their account and due to financial issues would benefit from having those fees reversed. Don't simply say you appreciate customer loyalty, show that you do. Listen to your customers and cut them a break, just like you are asking for yourself in the form of the tax-payers bailing you out.
To the others that look to preach, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I am an employee of national city. I work in the sales department now but was in the customer service call center for two years doing regular service work, customer escalations, and training. In your case, I do agree with you that 15 NSF fees is quite hefty. However, it has always been the bank (and most other bank's with the exception of credit unions) policy that the largest item will be posted first. Checks sometimes come in right before posting 10pm/11pmish.
This in no way shape or form is controlled by national city. It depends on the bank it was deposited at and how fast the federal reserve gets it back to the originating bank (in this case national city). The idea behind it is NOT fee generating, it is the simple fact of do you want a rent check to be returned NSF over a $2 charge to Taco Bell?
As far as fee refunds go, it is based on several things, length of relationship, dollar amount of relationship, number of overdraft/nsfs, has there been any fee waivers before? That type of thing. Based on that someone will make a decision which is noted in the account and will stand (i.e. if a rep makes a decision a supervisor, branch rep, another call center rep, or branch mgr will not override it). This is simply because there is set criteria for issuing fee refunds. Refunding one fee wouldnt necessarily help because if the account remains overdrawn for 4 business days you start accruing $8 a day until it's brought positive.
If you are unable to pay I would contact loss prevention at 877 459 3435 (I believe this is the correct number from memory) and make a payment arrangement. Do not let this go unsettled because they will report you to chexsystems prohibiting account opening at another financial institution.

There is no way the bank "know's" what checks YOU have outstanding. It is the consumer's responsibility to keep accurate records of any checks or debit card transactions you have outstanding. You were told you have pending tranactions and what the total was. You should have also been able to calculate the outstanding checks you had written that had not posted yet. This was not the banks fault. This was your fault!

Seriously, you're kidding, right? How is the bank teller supposed to know a paper check is pending on your account? Are you really that naive?
Second, how can you blame the bank for making not one, not two, but THIRTEEN transactions over what you had available? Don't be foolish. It's not the bank's responsibility to keep track of your checkbook. Maybe you shouldn't even have a checking account. Keep your money in cash in your mattress if you're going to be so ridiculous about it.

Come on Kristen! Please!!! I have been a customer of National City myself & have had the same thing happen through no fault of mine. National City WILL run the largest check through your account FIRST even though it may come in at the same time several other small items come through your account! They do that so they can drain the majority of the funds from your account & charge you several charges for all of the smaller items. When I questioned the bank about this, do you really want to know what I was told?? An actual banking rep told me that they do this because usually the larger checks are for mortgage payments, etc. She proceeded to say that "you would not want your house payment to bounce, would you?? Are you for real?? I don't even own a house! I would rather have one overdraft fee that 15 like this person had.
National City is the biggest Rip-off bank around. They will suck every dime out of your account for bogus fee!
I recently "CLOSED" my National City account. I went into a branch location & the teller closed the account. She even took my debit card that she said would no longer be valid & I can no longer access my account online. Well, a check for a measley $10 that was never cashed from my daughters school lunch account finally showed up & was processed through my "closed account." I only found this out because direct deposit is mandatory through The Division of Employment Security when you file for unemployment benefits. Since I was recently laid off from my job, I had to verify that this account was closed in order to have my benefits mailed to me. When I called the bank to verify the datemy account was closed, I was told that I had a negative balance of $550! What?? & How?? I was more or less called a liar & told that I never closed my account! I told the rep that I begged to differ with her & that yes, I DID close this account & that I no longer have a debit card or access to my bank account. She said because this $10 check came through, the account is now still open & they have charged me overdraft fees & an $8 charge for everday that this overdraft fee was not paid. I thought the account was closed after going into the bank & closing it. Since I have yet to receive a notice of any kind, how was I to know that they can reopen my account without me knowing about it??? Wait, it gets better!!!!!
The bank has not sent me ONE overdraft notice to date! I have no verification whether or not these charges are even real. The rep on the phone said they have been mailing them to me. I told her that I have not received one at my current address. When she verified my address, she gave me an old P.O. Box that I used to have & that is no longer even valid. Naturally she said that was my fault too. I told her that I changed my address with the bank & that they even verified my new address when I reordered checks, (that they also screwed up & originally sent to this wrong address). The check company said the bank was in error because they had to verify all of my info before sending out my new checks & they too were given the wrong address. This was definitely the banks fault!
In a nutshell, this bank rips people off without a doubt! They are in business to do so by charging ludicrous overdraft fees for EVERYTHING!!!! I will never deal wih them again & I don't know how you can even work for them. This bank makes their money off of overdraft fees! Wise up everyone that banks at NCB. THEY WILL EVENTUALLY RIP YOU OFF TOO!
Cori
P.S. In my area of Missouri, the Better Business Bureau has had 26 complaints against NCB in a 36 month period. That's considered an unsatisfactory record with the BBB.

It is not the fault of national city, it is you the consumer for not balancing your checkbook. The actual people who work here cannot control what is pending, the large check cleared first and the computer posted it. Why don't you look into overdraft protection?

How is the bank suppose to know when a paper check is going to come in? Any paper checks that come into a bank's processing center will all be processed after that business day has closed.
