They are luring people in by placing false apartment listings on craigslist. Someone responds asking you to submit your credit score, but NO personal information. In my case, "Amanda Payne" recommended creditscorereports.org which directs you to either a legitimate credit reporting site or nationalcreditreport.com.

I initially trusted the site because my norton antivirus said it was safe and the first page of google search terms showed only business listings, reviews, and identity theft protection information--- the second page of the search shows complaints about the service.

No one answers the phone number 1.888.887.2487 at nationalcreditreport.com. I called many times and would hear music, warnings about identity theft, then nothing and would be disconnected. I believe that they don't answer because they want to prevent you from cancelling the free 7-day trial. I have found no evidence that there is anyone at the end of this line, but I will continue to try for a few more days and update this posting if I find that someone does answer. They say that the only way to cancel the trial is by phone becuase they need to verify your identity. (This is not true! They did nothing to verify my identity when they told me the account was closed --- read on to find out what it takes to make this happen.)

In the last section of the "Refund & Cancellation Policy," it states that, "The $14.95 monthly fee will be charged to your credit card account after your free trial membership expires and your membership will continue automatically, billed at the beginning of each monthly membership period at the current rate." They change it to $14.95 weekly when you sign up!

The "C-O-M-O-D-O" verification seal on their homepage does not work and possibly fake. It looks very similar to the real verification seal which gives the site an appearance of legitimacy, but it is not the seal shown on the Comodo website.

---

I realized last night that this was a scam and I immediately signed up for chaseidprotection.com -- they have been fantastic! I cancelled my credit card and put fraud alerts on all of my credit reports this morning. From what I have read, I am very lucky because I was still in the trial period and they haven't charged my card, however I feel that I will need chaseidprotection services in the future.

I sent an email to customer service demanding that my trial be cancelled, my account closed, and my personal information deleted per section 10 of the privacy policy. I insisted that it be done before the end of the business day and that someone must contact me to confirm or I would take legal action. I sent another e-mail to Steel Vault Corporation's customer service.

I called their customer service number numerous times without reaching a person. I then called the Media and Investor Relations Person at their parent company Steel Vault Corporation, listened to a message and pressed 0 to speak to the attendant. I told her the same thing I put in my email and she eventually took my name and number to have someone contact me.

Within in the hour I received a phone call from "Brian" stating that my trial was cancelled, my account closed, and my information deleted and he gave me a confirmation number. I later received a generic email stating that my credit monitoring was cancelled -- but it did not include a confirmation number and it did not confirm that my account was closed or that my personal information was deleted. I only have Brian's word on the latter two points.

I confronted Brian about the customer service phone number -- he asked me what happened when I called. He gave excuses including: "high call volume this morning" and "the system doesn't just disconnect people."

I confronted Brian about the non-functional, possibly fake security seal. He said he "would look into it. The site is verified daily."

I confronted Brian about the Washington Post September 1, 2005 piece (available online) by Krebs that cites more than 2100 complaints filed against nationalcreditreport.com with the Federal Trade Commission from December 2004 to when he interviewed Pam Dixon of the World Privacy Forum. Brian said the company was now under new ownership and that it was a matter of public record.

I have reported nationalcreditreport.com to numerous consumer agencies and federal authorities.

WHAT IT ALL COMES DOWN TO...
This is either a case of...
1. ...an extraordinary number of random discrepancies within the website and problems happening to many people, which is possible.
OR
2. ...it's a scam, which is also possible.

MY PERSONAL BELIEFS:
I do not believe that you will be able to cancel your trial membership unless you are persistent and prepared to take legal action.

I do not believe that my personal information is safe with this company. I feel that I am more likely to be a victim of identity theft because of their unfair practices and unsecured website.

I am afraid of retaliation, so I cannot include my information.

I do not intend any of this to be construed as offensive. It is not only an account of discrepancies that you can confirm by examining the website, but also a truthful account of my experience using this company's service and my beliefs based upon that experience. If I find that any of my beliefs stated here denied or confirmed by future developments, I will update the report to be as accurate as possible.

They Are Misleading People!

AUTHOR: shirley - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 02, 2010

My husband and I were searching craigslist for rental houses in our area. On May 11, 2010 I received the following email to a listing of a house in Missouri City, TX. I received the very same email AGAIN on June 2, 2010 on a completely different listing of a house on the other side of Houston. Keep reading to see the response back from the email after this one...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Hello (name),
Thanks for taking the time to email me about the place.
We thought we had the place rented last week to a young couple, but communication has dropped off.   you are the first person to email about it since we put it back on the market . It would only be fair that we gave you the first shot at the property.
Normally, we would prefer a year lease, but would also be open to  shorter terms.  I'm sure that you will want to see the property before making a final decision.  I would simply give you the address and let you swing by, but my husband is against blindly advertising an empty home online.  Rest assured the home has been up kept properly and had a good cleaning and fresh coat of paint. Basic utilities are currently on, but we expect that you would get them put into your name fairly quick.
If you want to go ahead and schedule a time to see the property,  go to the link below and print off the free copy of your report.  Your score isn't necessarily important, we're just interested in seeing that there are no evictions / landlord related judgments.
Here is the link:  http://rental-verification.com/property20014/
I am very open as far as appointments go to show the property.  Any morning after 10am is fine.  Just let me know when you have everything printed and be sure to leave me a contact number to reach you at and any desired time. I will call you to confirm a time and choose a place to meet.
Thanks for looking,
Ernestine Cooke
I wrote back that I already had my credit report because I am signed up with Experian and also had my credit score to provide upon acceptance to see the home in person. This is the email I received back from Ernestine Cooke immediately after:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`

Hi there,

I'm so sorry for this...but the couple that was looking at the place originally, actually came back and put their deposit down.  I mentioned that things have been hectic around here... I guess they had been calling me frantically, and my phone was in a spot in our house that, for whatever reason, gets really bad reception...so I didn't even notice they were trying to call back.  Anyways, they just got back in touch with my husband and signed the lease, and put down the deposit and everything.  I'm really sorry for all this confusion.

We own multiple properties in the area so we will definitely keep you on the top of the list if anything else comes available soon.

Thanks,

Ernestine

Be very careful of clicking on links and especially giving out your private information online! Whether it is craigslist or ebay or any other honest online business. These are sites used for scamming all the time. It is not Craigslist or eBay's fault. I have reported my findings to Craiglist and am still awaiting reply.

Craigslist Scam

AUTHOR: TLP0907 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 13, 2010

I do not know if National Credit Report directly has anything to do with the craigslist scam. However, there are scams on craigslist where they are posing as property managers, etc., and posting rental property ads on cl. I found what I thought was a great rental property yesterday, and sent an email about it. I received the following email back:

"Thanks for taking the time to email me about the place. We thought we had the place rented last week to a young couple, but communication has dropped off. you are the first person to email about it since we put it back on the market . I thought this was strange because I had already told them in my email times that I would be available to view the property, and why would we discuss a place to meet... why not just meet AT the property? These made me think it might be a scam. So I went to the web site they sent me "rental-verification.com/rentalverification" and I was directed to NationalCreditReport.com. I was leery about giving any of my personal info so I googled National Credit Report Scam and found this website and a couple others. So whether National Credit Report IS actually in on the scam or not, I don't know, but because I was directed to their site FROM the craigslist scam ad I won't be using National Credit Report in the future.

False Accusations

AUTHOR: Floridabased - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 24, 2010

To begin with national credit report has nothing to do with the craigslist listing,and how can they lure people to they're websites,youre sounding as if they hypnotized you into putting your information into theyre website to view your credit report,and i know for a fact that the phones are answered,it just surprises me that the only ppl that claim these accusations are the ones that got charged the 14.95 because they were to late to call in and cancel within the 7 days of the trial period,its a 7 day trial period and it clearly states that on the website,its not in small print at all it actually says it more then once about the trial period and how u will be charged a auth fee of 14.95 when you first sign up and for those who dont read nor understand the difference between an auth hold and charge on theyre acct theyre the ones that get upset,and u contradicted yourself because at first you were saying how no one answered then you said (they say the only way to cancel is through phone and they didnt do anything to verify your identity when you called) well which is it,and you mean to tell me that everytime a person signs up for the acct they change the wording of the terms and conditions from weeks to months,come on now how ridiculous can you be,lets just be honest why u really wrote this report because you probably didnt get your 14.95 that you needed so bad,there's no need to discredit the compnay because you didnt get your way,how selfish of you.I know for a fact that this company is very legitimate and that there a live operaters that do answer the phone from 9am-5pm eastern standard time and im sure they have plenty customers that dont like they're service and plenty customers that do like theyre service just like any other company you have in america,im sure sprint or t-mobile has plenty complaints against them that dosent mean they dont do theyre job or that they're fraud,i have recieved excellent service from Nationalcreditreport.com and was never preassured into anything and didnt have a problem speaking with anyone or cancelling my account. And it didnt take many calls to do so,just one with a 2minute conversation.

Clarification, Transposed Digit Correction

AUTHOR: Stellar - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, February 14, 2010
Clarification: I used the online service, not a phone-based service to order my credit report.

Correction: I accidentally transposed two digits when I typed the phone number. It should read 1-888-887-4287.

Clarification: However, I just confirmed with my phone records that I did indeed call the correct number. It stands that I was disconnected by the system every time without ever speaking to customer service.

Used nationalcreditreport.com on 2-12-2010

AUTHOR: maroon&gold - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, February 12, 2010

I check ripoffreport.com frequently so when I viewed a 6-2009 negative report on National Credit Report.com I was apprehensive until I noticed that the phone number for the company used by that consumer had numbers inverted.  So, I took a chance and was happy with the outcome.  First, I called the correct number and went directly to the person to cancel the account. I wanted to see how fast I would be connected prior to even ordering service.  I had a 10 minute wait before talking to a human.

Next, I whipped out my credit card an ordered a trimerge (3 in 1 they also call it).  After creating a file I received the report within a few minutes.  A couple of days later, I contacted them to cancel.  This time there was no wait to talk to a human.  Yes, they tried to give me what I would call a "soft sell" on a monitoring service.  I only had to respond "no" once.  (No car salesman pitches where they keep asking.)

Not only did the person give me a confirmation number, but I also received an email within a few minutes confirming the canx.  I had offered to pay for the one time service but they said that I did not need to do so.

So, in the "for what it is worth department", my experience was positive.  However, if there is a problem with the confirmation or canx, I'll be back on ripoffreport.com toot sweet!!

My thanks for ripoffreport.com for providing an outlet for consumers.

Verifying Identity to Cancel Free-trial

AUTHOR: Stellar - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, June 26, 2009

For fairness and accuracy, it occurs to me that since Brian called my phone number, that may have been sufficient to "verify my identity," to cancel, but there was no direct questioning to verify my identity. Reputable companies do not usually verify identity so indirectly. Ebay and Banks have very thorough processes of verifying identity over the phone - which are similar to the questions you are asked to verify your identity to retrieve a credit report - however, they do not use just a phone call, they ask for specific information that can confirm your identity.
