My friend got a pop up on her computer that she could not get rid of. There was a phone number for National Support Solutions in the pop up for her to call to resolve the issue. When she called, the person she spoke to inferred that Microsoft had contacted them about malware on her computer. She was frightened and gave them her credit card number to pay $300 to 'fix' her problem. They requested remote access and she gave them user name, password and allowed them access. They removed her virus software, installed LogMeIn remote access software and put their own software on her computer.

Then the pop up was gone. She realized immediately after the incident, that she had been scammed. After all, why would a pop up caused by malware have a phone number embedded in it that will make it go away? Only one reason, the only problem she had was placed there by National Support Solutions! She called me to look at her computer and I removed the software they had installed and reinstalled her virus software, changed her user ID and password on the computer.

She then called her credit card company to dispute the charges. A week later, she received a gruff sounding email from Nat Supp Solutions telling her to cancel the dispute and they would give her money back. They were threatening to use voice records, video records of the software installation and all manner of other things to fight the disputed charges. Her credit card company suggested she continue with the dispute as she has no guarantee that National Support Solutions would refund her money and she already does not trust them. She intends to see this through and will take it to the States Attorney's office next.
