I've been fighting for the past 3 weeks to recover the second load of my parent's shipment from FL to TX. I happened to read an article in a reputable magazine about moving and it listed the movingscam.com website. I decided to look it up.

I read in disbelief Kelly from Portland, Maine's article about Nationwide Relocation and "Bobby" of Ferrari Moving. Her story is EXACTLY the same as mine....except I was moving my parents and it sickens me to know that in trying to make their move easier I've caused them to lose so many items they've had for 30-50 years...gone, destroyed, damaged, and some still being held...for ransom. What's even more disheartening is that as they unloaded my parent's first shipment, they told me where they were headed next....Kentucky to Maine. I wish I could have warned Kelly.

Everything was the same as Kelly's story. The "oh don't worry about the paperwork not being correct" and the weight of the truck not being the one they actually used. The showing up with a Penske truck and not being able to fit everything in it. The HUGE difference between the estimate and the "false" weigh in...and the claim that my parents had way more furniture than the list the movers were given.

The stories "Bobby" gave were quite diverse and got increasingly dramatic until the one that said we should plan to pay for another load if we wanted it sooner. We still don't have the second load.

We'd already paid him on the first load and I DID give his drivers a few hundred dollars in cash because when I called Moving Cost or Nationwide Relocation to ask about the different arrangements for payment, the woman said Bobby was one of the best movers they had and I could trust whatever he said.

We have the claim forms to fax to Ferrari Moving all filled out for all the broken and damaged items. It would've been faster to write down the items that were NOT damaged. Boxes were not marked at all...after the first few boxes nothing was wrapped...it was just dumped into the boxes. None of the furniture was blanketed so it was all rubbed raw to the metal or deep into the wood from riding packed so tight together.

As Kelly mentioned, they were professional on the phone and online with the estimate and beat out other estimates I'd obtained. It wasn't until the packing that we started to wonder about the legitimacy of this outfit.

Don't use them!!! You WILL regret it...and you WILL lose more than just money.

THANK YOU, Sharon and Larry

I so appreciate all the help and I wish success to your efforts too. I'm still "playing the game" with them. I called Bobby yesterday and told him I knew he was running a scam and I just wanted to know how to get my parents' stuff without paying any more money. He was outraged and then proceeded to bury himself in more lies ending in a threat that he'd have his attorney, "the best in Florida" call me today. I told him I'd welcome that call. Of course, I've heard nothing.

Cheri from Nationwide called me back this morning after I'd faxed her all my proof paperwork and she "told me" she is meeting with the Vice President today to discuss recompense. :)

I'm also following up on the leads you good people have shared at the same time. I've filed the first of the reports recommended on the movingscam.com home page.

Thanks...but I am going to take them to small claims for the maximum. Even if it just means they have to hire an attorney or the clown shows up himself.

Plus, I am going to scream at the Florida AG until they investigate this scam. What are the odds that three people in 30 days had the exact same situation with "ransomed furniture"?

I am sure if the AG looks at Nationwide's records, they will see that Ferrari is the mover of record virtually all the time.

They hooked the marlin this time.

Larry, I completely understand what you're going through, having been scammed myself. But I have to inform you of something called the Carmack Amendment, which effectively shields all moving companies from major lawsuits such as the one you are planning. The most you can actually do in court is to sue for the amount you have been overcharged to be returned to you, but usually the court costs alone eat up this settlement (if you ever receive it, that is). This is terrible, but the Moving Industry is the one place where people can blindly defraud the public and compeletely get away with it for several years.

Sorry if this bursts any bubble, but I'd hate to see an already-victimized person get further screwed by paying all sorts of legal fees only to find out it won't to a bit of good. Sucks.

Scripted Scam

I wish I had read your comments and the comment from the Portland victim before I posted my own. It is as if Ferrari and Nationwide were working from a script.

They did exactly the same thing to you and the other victim as they did to me.

I had a local atty in Round Rock but I am pursuing the small claim in Ft. Lauderdale myself due to the cost. I have filed an online complaint with the Florida AG.

My small claim suit will be citing: Breach of Contract, Quantum Meruit, Unjust Enrichment, Common-Law Fraud, Statuatory Fraud, Deceptive Trade Practices. It is possible we may be able to get a class action due to the exact circumstances that happened to all of us.

It's a free lawyer referral service for people whose loads are currently being held hostage. Explain the situation, and they will let you know if they think they can help.

As for the claims, do not even bother sending the fax to Ferrari. It will not get to the insurance company. Instead, fax it directly to the guys who should see it:

It may take some finagling to get the name of the specific insurance agent out of them, but be persistent. You need to not only get your claim paid, but you need to get Ferrari to lose their coverage.

Sadly, you will not receive anything near the value fo the broken items. Unless you purchased additional insurance, then your load was only coverd for the basic "valuation" coverage, usually 60 cents per pound of weight of the broken item. So a ten-pound bowling ball would get replaced for $6.00, and Picasso painting would probably fetch about $10.00. It sucks.
