Generate a "cease and desist" letter for the company in question, send it via registered mail requiring a signature on delivery. If you feel you are being persued unfairly for a debt that you do not owe, say so in the letter, and that you require proof of debt and/or you will deal only with the original creditor, not a "third party collection agency". Ever. Let them know that any further attempts at contact via phone or mail will be viewed as harassment and can be acted on via legal means.

Under the Fair Debt Collection Act, you are entitled to ask, and be told, the physical address of the collection agency. You are also entitled, under the Act, to be treated with respect. This means yelling on the part of the collection agent is right out. Always remember that this is a two way street too.

Other things they may pull, against which you have protection under the Act, is that these people may NOT contact your friends and family members and badger them regarding any arrears. they may ask if they know how to contact you, but that is all. They may not represent themselves as law enforcement, as an arm of law enforcement or threaten you with action by law enforcement.They are also forbidden to harass you in the workplace.

Look up the FDCA, look up sample cease and desist letters via Google and arm yourself with your rights (and responsibilities) under the FDCA. You'll usually find that once collectors know you have a grip on this info, their demeanor can change drastically, and in your favor. Collectors depend and prey on people not knowing their legal rights, hope that they panic and capitulate quickly to their demands. Remember they get paid for results, and the faster they get those results, the bigger their slice of the pie is.
