There are increasing complaints of new home defects, code violations, and breach of warranty, and avoiding it as a consumer is NOT as easy as asking around, and checking the Better Business Bureau.. In fact, many home buyers who rely on that find themselves embroiled in New Home Nightmares, surprised that building codes were not enforced and neither is the law in many cases. In some states, builders have lobbied for a new law, often called Right to Repair, which you must follow to the letter or risk your case being thrown out. Most home buyers don't even know if their state HAS passed a Right to Repair law and only may be made aware of it if there's an active consumer advocacy group in the state opposing it! Read books that warn of home building industry scams and tactics, and discuss in depth how to REALLY research builders. One example is "Your New House," by Fields. Check court records, and your state's secretary of state office to see if the company officers have other corporations...then research them, too.

HADD receives thousands of complaints about home builders, many involving serious defects, some which make the home unsafe and uninhabitable. This is happening to people of every level of education and income, with homes in all price ranges. Most of these people didn't realize how well hidden most complaints really are and thought they were doing diligent research before they bought.
