I avoid toll booths in New Jersey because my experience has shown me that they regularly bill you for offenses that did not happen. Even the trickiness of having unmanned booths with only an EZPass or Exact Change option sets up a trap for people who are not used to such a trap. Luckily, I carry rolls of quarters with me. Still, I get a notice about 20% of the times that I travel the Garden State and other toll booths leading into New Jersey. And yes, often the "Paid" message does not come on, even if I slide the toll in one quarter at a time. Booth workers will wave you through when you let them know that the sign isn't working but you're always at risk because there's no way to prove you put your quarters in the toll box. What a shame!!
