1) Carol Schilling, Kent Agness and Lisa Shover Kackley of the The Nina Pulliam Charitable Trust proudly advertises that they gave SWCC ZOO in Scottsdale an additional $100,000 to operate its facility. azcentral.com/story/opinion/op-ed/2016/04/04/southwest-wildlife-conservation-center/82588710/ The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust refers to SWCC Scottsdale as a "renowned, accredited sanctuary” FALSE: SWCC Scottsdale is NOT a sanctuary….it is a ZOO, and a cruel zoo at that. It is licensed as a zoo according to the Fish and Game and the US Federal wildlife. The zoo name is "The Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center” which is very deceiving. Technically, you can name a zoo whatever you want. There is nothing forbidding SWCC Scottsdale Or the Phoenix Zoo from naming itself "Phoenix Animal Sanctuary” if they felt like it. If Carol Schilling, Kent Agness and Lisa Shover Kackley of The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust thinks it is actually supporting a REAL animal "conservation center” they are sadly mistaken. They have bought into the lies from the SWCC Scottsdale owner Linda Searles. There are dozens of REAL, LEGITIMATE wildlife sanctuaries where they can go where they wouldn’t be kept in cages, and would be kept in a more comfortable climate than the Sonoran desert where the temperature can reach 115 degrees in the shade!. 3) "Nina Mason Pulliam had a passion for animals and nature.” HEY: Carol Schilling, Kent Agness and Lisa Shover Kackley: here is a video taken at SWCC by Richelle Fatheree (an SWCC employee) on an SWCC bobcat. Do you this this is "passionate” care of animals?? SWCC ANIMALS HAVE ZOOCHOSIS!! Congratulations to you three people for donating Nina Mason’s money to support this poor beautiful creature’s miserable, hot existence. As you can see the adult cat in this video want to be free and could be freed TODAY….except for the fact that SWCC zoo need to imprison the animals in order for Linda Searle to make a living. Why Scottsdale? Of course, Linda Searles and Richelle Fatheree could advocate moving their zoo to a further north where the climate is significantly more hospitable, but there it would be a lot harder to gouge the rich Scottsdale WINTER VISOTRS for cash donations, wouldn’t it? According to the PETA website: Zoos like SWCC Scottsdale and their advocates like Richelle Fatheree teach people that it is acceptable to interfere with animals and keep them locked up in captivity, where they are bored, cramped, lonely, deprived of all control over their lives, and far from their natural homes. The Wall Street Journal reported in 2003 that "nearly half of the country’s zoos are facing cutbacks this year … [a]ttendance, meanwhile, is down about 3% nationwide.” Precious funds that should be used to provide more humane conditions for animals are often squandered on cosmetic improvements—such as landscaping, refreshment stands, and gift shops—in order to draw visitors. And of course, SWCC Scottsdale has a gift shop to raise money to imprison MORE non-native animals in the hot Sonoran desert instead of providing their animals with their natural habitat: SWCC Scottsdale: "Entertainment and Money” Not "Education” SWCC claims to provide educational opportunities, but most visitors spend only a few minutes at each display, seeking entertainment rather than enlightenment. The fact is, all zoos claim to offer education.

Over the course of five summers, a curator at the National Zoo followed more than 700 zoo visitors and found that "it didn’t matter what was on display … people [were] treating the exhibits like wallpaper.” He determined that "officials should stop kidding themselves about the tremendous educational value of showing an animal behind a glass wall.” All of SWCC’s /zoo enclosures are very small, and SWCC is the smallest "conservation center” anywhere in the USA. Rather than promoting respect for or understanding of animals, signs often provide little more information than an animal’s species, diet, and natural range. Animals’ normal behavior is seldom discussed, much less observed, because their natural needs are rarely met. Natural hunting and mating behaviors are virtually eliminated by regulated feeding and breeding regimens, and yes, SWCC Scottsdale has a breeding program…According to Linda Searles and SWCC Scottsdale, SWCC Scottsdale breeds their Mexican Grey Wolves, only so that they can keep them in captivity for eternity. After all, releasing their Mexican Grey Wolves would be bad for business, right? Linda Searles’ Animals at SWCC Scottsdale are closely confined, lack privacy, and have little opportunity for mental stimulation or physical exercise. These conditions often result in abnormal and self-destructive behavior, known as "zoochosis.”

An Oxford University study based on four decades of observing animals in captivity and in the wild found that animals such as polar bears, lions, tigers, and cheetahs "show the most evidence of stress and/or psychological dysfunction in captivity” and concluded that "the keeping of naturally wide-ranging carnivores should be either fundamentally improved or phased out.” A survey of the records of 4,500 elephants both in the wild and in captivity found that the median life span for an African elephant in a zoo was 16.9 years, whereas African elephants on a nature preserve died of natural causes at a median age of 56 years. Researchers concluded that "bringing elephants into zoos profoundly impairs their viability.” I wonder what Richelle Fatheree, SWCC Scottsdale and Linda Searles would think of those statistics? Probably not much….they are too busy counting all their cash donations from all of suckers who donate to their SWCC Scottsdale zoo.
