Nobis Works Tommy Nobis Center The Truth About This Institution Marietta Georgia

I spent 16 months working for Nobis Works (formerly known as the Tommy Nobis Center) in the late 90s. I was referred to the institution by teachers, counselors, evaluators and other professionals my senior year of high school. When I began with the Tommy Nobis Center, I was promised that the staff at that institute would lead me to a good and lucrative job at an established company. Shortly after I graduated from high school I began working a slightly lucrative contract job between the TNC and Lockheed. My tenure there was 8 months and expired because the contract had expired.

I returned to the Tommy Nobis Center under the impression that I would be led to a good job with benefits. Yet 5 MONTHS passed and the Center did not find me anything. But that's only the beginning.

The Tommy Nobis Center is designed for people who have SEVERE disabilities, and I don't have that, so technically I didn't belong there. Truth is, there were several people like myself who did not belong at that institution. Anyway, in addition to the ridiculous wait time for them to find me a job, I was also treated as if I were an incompetent, even though I am NOT one. The staff at TNC will forever berate a client over one minor error, no matter how insignificant, but yet totally ignore the clients' strenghts. The staff also do what they can to convince their clients that they are incompetent and that they're only hope of a good job is thorugh the TNC. Basically, they did nothing but jerk me around for all those months.

One incident stands out in particular, that being when a staff member took me to meet management of a local country club, but merely to learn about all the jobs out there, NOT to interview me or offer me a position (one can read the classifieds of their local paper to do that.) 

When the Center finally does find someone a regular job, it's always one of the crappiest jobs imaginable, such as working PART TIME as a bagger in a supermarket, even if one is capable of doing far better jobs. In addition to that, the employer will always keep the Tommy Nobis Center clients at the lowest position possible because they're percieved as "retarded". For example, if one gets a job at a supermarket, they'll ALWAYS be a bagger with no chance of ever accessing a higher position. And on top of that, the Center will send job coaches to the job site to harass the former client at their new place of work.

The aforementioned never happened to me personally, because I finally got tired of the Center jerking me around and treating me like a hopeless incompetent. So I finally quit the Tommy Nobis Center and began looking for a good job on my own, and I found a full time job as a perishable stocker at a local supermarket. And I secured that good position just ONE WEEK after I began looking, compared to how it takes Tommy Nobis at least 6 months on average to find a client a job.

And one more thing, during the last few months at the Tommy Nobis Center, the staff informed me that they would provide me computer training for an office career. But somehow they conveniently "forgot" about that.

The Tommy Nobis Center, or Nobis Works as it's now known, is a scam and a ripoff. And I know this firsthand from both my own experiences and from several other people who've been victimized by the center. The TNC claims that it's doing good for people, but it's really just bringing in many people who don't even belong there just to scam them.

In the years since I left Tommy Nobis, I've been able to hold down jobs and have benefits WITHOUT the sorry "help" of the TNC.
