This guy will post houses for rent at normal prices on Craigslist.org, so it is easy to believe him. The catch is, he doesn't care about your credit, your income, past evictions, anything that a REAL property manager does care about.

He just asks for $1500 or so to pay for a couple month's rent in advance. He breaks into vacant houses and poses as a rental manager for a company called North Gate Assets Company. He'll even direct you to his website, nitedrealestatenetwork.com. >North gate assets company. It'll give you an 866-397-1360 number and it directs the call to his personal cell, 240-386-9274.

He told me his name is Thomas but I never got a last name. He was always vague on the phone. I contacted Sacramento County Assessor's Office to see who held the deed to the house, and they told me the home was sale-pending.

I got the owner's name and address and used 411 to call him & ask if he was using a rental management company. He was surprised and shocked to hear what I had to say! He had no idea that while their sale was pending, this guy was going to take somebody's $1500 and give them a phony lease.

In summary, do lots of research on a house before you rent from anybody. They could be a con artist giving you a fake lease and taking off with your money. Research the home by calling the Sacramento County Assessor's Office at 916-875-0700. They were very helpful. They also suggested to check with County Records to see if there was any more information. That number is 916-874-6334.

I hope this saves somebody from wasting their time/money/hopes because of this scam. He almost got us. I did file a police report so if you feel you've fallen victim to this same man's con, then contact the Sacramento Police Dept. and the case ID# is 2012-1808477.
