I recently obtained service of my new Toyota vehicle. I received numerous notifications of the FREE, COMPLIMENTARY 2 year service.
I took the vehicle in and the service writer wrote the workorder with a $36 fee for the "FREE" service. I questioned him and was told it would be removed later- note to self to watch for that...
I also requested additional hard use service and the service writer entered it on the same workorder at the price of an additional $230.50 Taxes additional, fair, for an estimated amount. I left it to be serviced
Upon return to settle up, another writer helped me get the billing done since the original person left for the day after notifying me of as much and conveying to me he would bring the substitute person completely up to speed on the matter- which when asked I was informed did not happen.
When the bill was presented it was for over $320, when I sternly questioned about the almost $100 increase, he reviewed it and made a couple of clicks on his terminal, took the paperwork he had just presented to me and shredded it.
The new amount due was $294.90 - an unannounced increase of about $64 - still not acceptable. I stated as much and he said he could do better (WTF).
At this point he stated he would apply a discount of 10% which, by the way DOES NOT SHOW AS BEING ACTUALLY APPLIED, I said the original amount was closer to $200 and he fiddled around some more and said he would apply another credit, it is noted as "Less Insurance $61.89" on the invoice. This put the amount closer to the original unchanged original Workorder.
After leaving and upon closer examination of the entire matter, I see where the Extra service was padded $28.40 as well as the COMPLIMENTARY service was left on the invoice for an additional $36.
The Less Insurance (CREDIT) item added at the end of our discussion came to the EXACT amount of the unapplied DISCOUNT ($25.89) shown on the invoice previous page PLUS the EXACT amount of the FREE COMPLIMENTARY SERVICE! Effectively, I was OVERCHARGED $28.40 for the up-charge of the hard use service.
In summary, Northridge attempted to charge me an additional $90.29 over and above the original quote without anything to substatiate it other than a barrage of paperwork to hide the details.
Customers BEWARE- Northridge Toyota believes your money is best suited in their pockets, justified OR NOT, and will pull out all the stops to facilitate it.

To be fair-

I met today with the service manager and he said the hard use item was not even justified for a vehicle without mileage/use to require it. The outcome from his action was a full refund of the charges above a requested oil change. NOW I can say the correct remedy was received and appreciated.
However, had this fallen into someone's field of non-expertise, the unsuspecting customer would have paid the original $320 bill for a requested oil change. This type of business practice is my only issue at this time because I was able to get some charges credited and return to speak with management and have the rest credited to me.
The actions on my part should never have been needed to get to a final fair price. Had Northridge Toyota handled it correctly by FIRST, not listing an item on the workorder as COMPLIMENTARY and $36. That action is contrary and cancels each other, besideswich it is just reprehensible practice.
