On Tuesday, January 01, 2008 I flew From Amman/Jordan to London Heathrow as specified in my itinerary from the Airline Company. Then, I was supposed to leave Heathrow airport and go to London Gatwick airport to make my connection to Detroit airport. Unfortunately, I found that the connection time that was given to me by the airline company, which is 2 hours and 45 minutes, was impossible to make. Therefore, I missed my flight and I was forced to spend the night in London. I believe the Airline Company ought to reimburse for all the extra charges that occurred during my stay which amounts to $377.29.

Why 2 hours and 45 minutes are not enough:
1. It takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to drive from Heathrow to Gatwick.
2.I had to checkout my luggage from Heathrow and check it back in at Gatwick and that also cost time.
3.I had to stand in line to buy a bus ticket to Gatwick.
4.In addition to the above, I had to do that while currying 3 suitcases and also being not familiar with both airports.
5.Despite the above, I arrived 20 minutes before the departure and

Please check:
(((Redacted)))
It clearly indicates that the minimum connection time should be 3 hrs. Unfortunately, I found that after getting back to the US.

was told that I was too late to make the flight.
Why Northwest is responsible for my charges:
1. Northwest itinerary should not be considered a legitimate or a valid one because of the connection time.
2.When paying $1,454.39, I was under the impression that the payment I made is my complete charges for the transportation to travel from Memphis Airport (MEM) to Amman (AMM) and back not including customs and other charges made by the countries I'm visiting. Northwest Failed to inform me that I had to book a bus ticket from Heathrow Airport to Gatwick. I had no British currency on me, and I ended up using my ATM card to pay for the ticket and other charges. We all know how expensive it is to use your US ATM card in other countries and what kind of currency exchange rate we get !!!.

Since then, I have been trying to get NWA to reimburse me the hotel fees without success. As a matter of fact, I have tried to explain to them that they need to change the connection time and they still insist that it is good. I kept all my messages to them and their replies, knowing that the one day I will need to use these messages. Please let me know if you think this is all my fault by the way, I still blame myself. If you think so, I will just forget about the whole thing and move over. But deep inside me I know that they know that the connection time is not enough and it is just another way for them to sell an extra ticket.

"Legal" Connecting Times

AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, June 26, 2008

Airlines have minimum connecting times that for the most part are ridiculous. I always allow myself at least two and a half to three hours to make a connection at a major airport and if I had to make a transit from Heathrow to Gatwick I would allow myself a minimum of four hours. You probably had to go through customs at Heathrow upon arrival since you were not leaving from the same airport. This takes time as well as baggage claim, waiting for the bus, etc. You need to plan an itinerary BEFORE buying a ticket, using flights and airlines that allow adequate time for airport or gate/concourse changes. I've seen connection times at DFW as little as 45 minutes. When you take into account late flights and concourse changes these "legal" connections are virtually impossible to make. An hour and 15 minutes to get to Gatwick probably is in mid day. Try doing it in rush hour sometime.
