I bought a building from Olympia Steel Bdgs, also know as Universal Steel Bldgs. Dealt with George D. Poelcher Jr. Signed the contract, gave them a deposit and agreed to a delivery date that was 3 weeks out. That day came and went. I would text George only to be told someone would call me on Monday. The Mondays came and went with no phone calls. Never could get any answers from George. I understand it takes time to get things done but no one ever called to let me know what's going on. At this point I did't know if the bldg was coming or not. I called George today and besides being about the rudest guy in the world he ended up hanging up on me.

That's great customer service for you. A rep named Ian called me back and discussed everything that is going on. Ian is a very nice guy that saved the deal. I'm still waiting on my bldg though. I have a delivery date of 2/6, but I had one before that didn't pan out so we shall see. There are a lot of dealers that sell metal bldgs. Olympia sells bldgs that are manufactured in Terrell, TX by Nucor. George obviously missed the customer service part of his training. Very, very unprofessional. I'll update when/if I get my bldg.. Update: Finally received the bldg. Feb 9th, 30 days later than promised. Due to weather delays we didn’t get  started until first part of March to put it up.

Got the frame up and realized there was a problem. Y roll up doors on one end wall were not going to clear the overhead I-beam.  In my talks with George we had numerous discussions about me using roll up doors in my bldg. The way one of the end walls was designed for this bldg. was not going to let me use the roll up doors. The doors were already on the ground and couldn’t be sent back as they were ordered separate from the bldg. kit. I called Nucor, the folks that built the kit for Olympia Steel Bldgs,  and was told they were not informed I was using roll up doors. George called and asked why I was contacting Nucor when I should be calling him. I told George of my problem and he said he would get back to me.

Didn’t hear from him for several days so I called Nucor back and they said they were not able to help me. George was no help either as he would not return phone calls. With materials and labor to fix the end wall to make it work ran me right at $1500. Being reasonable I was just trying to get them to pay for the materials part, which was about $700. I got a hold of a guy named Cory Montgomery, who was some kind of rep for both outfits and explained to him my problem. He listened and said he wished he could help but couldn’t do anything. He actually had the audacity to tell me it was my fault for not buying the bldg. from a Nucor contractor. I explained that I did buy it from a dealer but it made no difference to him. I then called and got a hold of Victor Gutierrez, the Sales Mgr at Olympia. Explained my problem to him and he said he would get back to me. After several weeks of phone calls he finally answered the phone and said they would offer me $400.

I thought about it and tried to call him back but to no avail so I was a little pissed. I then posted the first part of this review on Google in mid- March and figured I was just out the money.  On April 9th I’m sitting at the fire station and George texts me out of the blue about how did I like my new bldg. After several texts back and forth about the ordeal, and you can imagine how that went, I finally was told that a customer had read the review on Google and he wanted me to take it down. He also stated that the $400 that Victor offered me was off the table. George then said he was paid $100 on the sale of my bldg. and would send that to me if I took it down. I let it go and was done until the next day. I got a call from Victor about lunch time and he was mad as hell that I put up a Google review. He said that it wasn’t right that I did that and thought it was slander. I stated that I just listed the facts of the ordeal.

We had a very long conversation. He wanted to send the $400 right then if I agreed to take down the review. I told him I thought that George said that offer was off the table and that’s when he started to yell. I remained calm and just stated that all I was actually wanting was to be reimbursed for the materials. After a long conversation he finally calmed down and said he would talk to Nucor and come up with something more, even if Nucor would not do anything he would pay the entire amount. Several weeks go by and I call Victor and am told that he’s working on it. This goes on for several weeks where he would actually answer my calls. I would call daily as he started not answering or returning calls until today. Victor offered and extra $100 because I didn’t have anything in writing about the doors even though George did admit that he sent in a change order about the roll up doors.

So the bottom line in my opinion is that if you want good customer service or someone that will stand behind their products when you have a problem then go with someone else. I was very disappointed in Victor, Nucor and will never ever use them or Olympia Steel bldgs. again.  When you put the problems on the customer and say it’s all their fault, even when the salesman admits he turned in the change order is unbelievable. It’s all based on money and obviously that is more important to Victor and Olympia Steel bldgs. than having good customer service. My advice is to find a local contractor to fab your bldg. on-site. Someone you can call with a problem that cares about his reputation.

In my opinion if you want lousy customer service, make repeated phone calls that aren’t returned and be promised something that will never happen then call  Victor Gutierrez or George Poelcher at Olympia Steel Bldgs. I was completely wrong about Nucor being a top notch outfit as they did less to help me than Olympia. Everyone involved had their money and no incentive to help me with my problem. It is my opinion that because they deal in bulk that they don’t worry about these customer problems. I hope this helps keep someone from going through the same hassles and having to spend extra money just to complete your project. Customer service is everything and these guys missed the boat. Have a good day!
