Nearly 3 months ago I was contacted by someone claiming to be from visa credit card services about entering a sweepstakes and getting a free diamond watch. I was actually busy at the time but I continued to listen. They also wanted to offer me discounted magazine subscriptions. My current magazine subscriptions were ending so I thought why not thinking it would save me from having to hunt down the best prices. I would end up getting something like 4 or 5 magazines including two weeklies and it would only be 3 and some change a week. This seemed like a very good deal.
After completing my order the guy said I would need to speak to his supervisor to make sure he did everything right. All of these people seemed very nice. The supervisor said they would like to give me 3 years of subscriptions that I would pay in 1 1/2 years at around 24 a month. I said okay because it was the same difference. They kept trying to sell me more asking about my hobbies and I said no. Well the guy said I was done and thanked me. I then had to talk to a woman to reconfirm my order she then stated a monthly price far more being 65 dollars. they use very confusing tactics and move numbers around a lot. I stated that I couldn't do that it was simply too much for magazines. She then said basically I had no choice because I had already signed an voice contract when I first agreed to buy the magazines. I told her I did not care they were changing the contract around how could it still be valid. I was never made aware this was set in stone. I have ordered services before and later canceled them being dissatisfied and was always treated very kindly. As far as I have found unless you sign the package they send you and send it back it isn't valid anyway.
I told her to not charge my card because this contract wasn't valid. She stated they already had. I told her I would be calling my bank to warn them of this fraud and that the contract wasn't valid you must be warned that you are entering into one and I wouldn't take these services. I then hung up and called my bank. Sure enough $65 had been charged . The operator told me that she would do a charge back and cancel this card so that they couldn't charge anymore. She then told me this wasn't the first time she had heard this story and this was indeed what was considered fraud by the bank. At this point i breathed a sigh of relief thinking it was over. I didn't ever receive anything from this company no welcome package, magazines, other products or letters.
Then a few days ago I received a letter from them stating I owed 786.24 (this seems to be a common number they use with different people) I then called the number to dispute this. The man on the line was very rude and said how it was funny I received nothing else but I got this. He was saying they had contacted me numerous times over the last three months via mail and phone. This is funny because I have no children and am the only one who checks the mail. Also the number they had was my cell phone and I never got any of their calls which is funny because it is with me 24/7. He then stated I had signed a contract and my original call was recorded BLAH BLAH BLAH.. same story as before. I told him I woulds contact my lawyer and call him back. I called my lawyer's office and talked to his paralegal because he was out. She told me to call back and ask to hear the so called tape. I did and after being bounced around was told their system wasn't working today (another common story i have read). How convenient for them huh?
I have since filed reports with everyone who accepts such things. PLEASE if anyone calls you about magazines over the phone hang up don't speak a word or you could be in a contract by their wacky standards. If you want magazines order them directly from the publisher or from children in your family for their schools. That is what I normally do and have never had any issue. Don't buy them from the door to door people either as they are to a scam but at least they pose no threat to your credit. I plan to do anything I can to rectify this situation. They basically have nothing to push this but they can still ruin my credit. Anyone with your name and address can file a collection even without your ssn.
