I am a parent of a graduating senior of Wash U this year. I wanted to order a diploma frame from the brochure that I was sent from On Campus Marketing aka DiplomaDisplay. The mailing letter from Wash U says "We are pleased to let you know that we have arranged discounted $5 FedEx shipping on any diploma frame ordered right now and for a limited time, ...No promo code needed! For fastest confirmation, you can visit our website or call to place your order. If you prefer to mail your order, you can leave off the shipping charge." On the brochure it says "Discounted $5 FedEx shipping when ordered by May 5th. Order online at: wustl6.ocm.com etc or Call 1800-422-4100.” One additional insert says “We have arranged $5 FedEx shipping on any diploma frame ordered right now. For fastest confirmation, you can visit our website or call to place your order.” I went to place my order online, but the shipping showed up as $20. I then spent 45 minutes online chatting with a rep from DiplomaDisplay. He finally agreed that if I would provide my order number (which I hadn’t placed yet), he would process “that refund” presumably meaning the $15 refund we had just been discussing. So, I submitted my order, and he then said he would refund $5, instead of $15. I explained to him that the materials indicated $5 shipping, not $15. He said: “I am sorry Angela the promotion is giving you a $5 discount in shipping. Meaning you will be paying $15 in shipping instead of $20.” I explained to him that the brochure shows the "$20" crossed out and "$5" in its place. And that the letter from the university says "Only $5 Fed Ex shipping on any style of frame". Then he said they have no record of the $5 FedEx shipping, and if I take a picture of the brochure and email it to their Customer Service, they will process the refund, which I did. I have little faith they will honor their word. This is completely deceptive. While Diploma Display may refund my money, I’m concerned about the difficulty with which I was faced in getting the value as advertised. I believe the company is counting on parents just giving up because the $15 is not worth the effort to wrest it out of them and therefore benefitting to the tune of thousands of dollars a year in ill-gained profits.
