I had a savings account with OneUnited bank (OUB), with eventual plans to transition other accounts, pending service. Initially, I had no major issues with OUB as I mostly was using it for small deposits. But I had an error with Paypal that was causing multiple small transactions to hit this OUB account, eventually causing overdraft. However, OUB rejected any amount submitted (ranged from $1-$30), and charged me $37 for each rejected transaction, totaling close to $200. After I fixed the issue with Paypal, I notified OUB of the issue and asked about depositing monies to cover the deficit and any future transactions that may attempt to come through due to the Paypal error. However, the customer service representatives I talked to seemed to be poor troubleshooters and disallowed me from discussing the issue with management, often providing the wrong or confusing information. In total, I talked to approximately six or more different customer service reps, of whom, each time, I had to spend a sufficient amount of time going through the history of my calls and the situation. It took a couple of weeks to get the matter settled, but by then, I decided that banking with this bank was not wise as the incurred fees for rejected transactions was ridiculous, some of their processes were antiquated (i.e., change of address), and their customer service reps, though friendly, were not trained well.

In conclusion, a few things I’d like to note: Though I took the blame and paid fees for the error with Paypal, it seemed that no one at OUB had a valid solution in how I could stop payment on the account to not incur fees, while making a deposit to cover the current and any future fees. Since this was an online banking account, transfers were my only true option. But the time frame for transfers (3 days) made it difficult to transfer monies while not occurring the associated fees for an issue I notified them of. As well, I take the blame for not reading any policies concerning fees for overdraft. I honestly never thought there would be an error causing this issue. But to charge a person $37 each time for a $1, $3, $5, and even $30 REJECTED transaction seems a bit ridiculous. This has been the worst banking experience of my entire life.

Update to Address Rebuttals

AUTHOR: Jenelle - (United States)

POSTED: Monday, August 13, 2018

Update to address three rebuttals:

Thank you for your comments. This is my first time using ripoffreport, so I thought brevity might be better. I see that I might have been wrong. To address some of the comments, let me provide a more thorough account (the one I sent to BBB who has them listed with an “F” rating).

Mid July, I took a business trip to Chicago and used Uber and Lyft for transportation, making multiple charges to my Paypal account. At the time, I believed that my Paypal account was using my checking account with my primary bank for these transactions. After receiving notices from Paypal, it was determined that my OneUnited Bank (OUB) savings account was being used and there were multiple charges for overdraft. I called Paypal to remedy the error and was told that they were fixing it, but that because the Uber and Lyft system is setup as a transfer, it was scheduled to try with the same bank (OUB) every three days. Paypal offered to provide a letter for me to give to my bank. I then immediately scheduled a $500 transfer to OUB to cover the current deficit and any additional transactions that would attempt to come through again because of the 3 day “try again” setup. However, based on OUB’s policy, it would be three business days before that transfer would be cleared (it was a Friday), and since this is an online banking account, an immediate deposit at a oneunited bank was not available.

After explaining the issue to an OUB Customer Service Representative, and notifying them that I had a letter from Paypal concerning the error, I asked what we could do concerning the multiple current $37 fees, and any future fees as a result of this error. A reversal was done for two of the nine $37 charges. They then explained that they could stop payment and freeze the account to disallow any more charges, but this also meant that my $500 deposit would not go through. So I ended up “stopping payment” on the account so that the next time Paypal tried to charge (every 3 days), it would not go through, so that I wouldn’t incur the charges all over again. But this would not solve the problem of covering the deficit caused by the Paypal error, and fees that would come when it re-tried. After talking to multiple customer service reps, it was determined that I could do an immediate transfer with my bank while they took off the stop payment feature. The same day I did the transfer that took care of the deficit, OUB charged me a $37 fee three times for three transactions that attempted to come through Paypal again, even though I talked with the CSR and discussed the immediate transfer.

I called OUB and explained the history, and they did a reversal of the three fees. I then informed the CSR that I wanted to close the account because of all of the hassles. She told me I would first have to have a zero balance. I asked her could I just transfer the current funds from OUB to my checking account to obtain the zero balance. She said yes. I tried to setup an external transfer using OUB’s online banking system but it kept giving me issues (as an aside, there were always issues when I attempted to use the online system; sometimes it was down or it would just kick me out; the same issues happened when I would call; there were multiple times where I called, the system would put me on hold, and then it would just hang up). After several phone calls with OUB, they finally took care of the issue so that I could make the transfer. The same day I made the transfer, I was charged a $5 maintenance fee, which again, disallowed me from closing the account. Eventually, after talking with a CSR multiple times, we were finally able to close the account.

To address some of the comments:

-I did attempt to take it up with paypal as I stated. They connected the right account, and provided a letter to give to the bank. However, they notified me that Uber and Lyft were setup as transfers so that it would retry on the same account every 3 days and that the best thing to do was notify the bank of this

-concerning the “deficient in monies” comment, as I said, this was not my primary account. It was an account I used for small deposits and as a trial. I did not have knowledge that Paypal had connected it as the primary bank for uber and lyft as my other connected paypal accounts were using my checking account. As I said it the initial complaint, I took responsibility for the Paypal error, but when I was trying to cover it by depositing $500 (which was well over the $243 deficit…$200 of it was from those $37 fees), OUB would not let me deposit the money without unfreezing the account, which would cause an additional nine $37 fees to hit the account (as it did as I described in my narrative above). So my complaint is not so much the fee (yes that is an issue, but not the major issue), but the fact that no matter who I talked to, no one could help me or troubleshoot on how to deposit monies to cover the error, while not incurring those same charges again while the account was open for deposits. I could never speak to a manager, no matter how many times I asked. And each time I called (and was actually able to get through), I had to recount the history because I was speaking to someone new who didn’t know the situation and wouldn’t let me speak to a manager so that it could all be taken care of expeditiously.

-concerning the standard $37 charge, I did not know that. Thank you for that information. I have heard of charges for overdraft, but usually, they will pay the overdraft and then charge a fee. But thank you for educating me on the fact that this is standard.

Your own admission

AUTHOR: Robert - (United States)

POSTED: Monday, August 13, 2018

By your own admission this wasn't this bank's issue, it was a "PayPal" issue. So why are you trying to hold the bank responsible instead of PayPal?

Then why are you expecting the bank to come up with solution to stop charges from an outside company? If you want to stop charges from an outside company...why aren't you talking to that company?

Why are you being so generous and taking the fees caused by "Paypal"? Are you tring to play the martyr role and fall on the sword for a multi-billion dollar company or were these issues really caused by your actions(or inaction).

Non Sufficient Fund (NSF) fees

It's certainly your choice to stay with this bank or to go to another bank. But by aware that every bank charges when an item is presented and returned unpaid (for any reason). $37 per time is a standard amount.
