OSI is the worst. Back in 2005 I had an account go into collections (totally my fault). I was able to pull together eneough money to make one settlement payment. I sent the check to OSI and actually even received a confirmation letter from them saying that they and the creditor agreed to accept the payment as a settlement on the account. That was November 1,2005.
Please, someone, tell me how about 2 months ago I suddenly started receiving calls from another collection agency on THE SAME ACCOUNT? I tried explaining that this matter had been resolved about a year ago but they (LTD Collections) were insistent that I needed to submit payment to them or documentation of the payment that was made to OSI in the form of a receipt.
It seriously took me a couple of months, but yesterday I was finally able to find the letter from OSI saying that I had submitted the payment and that they and the creditor had accepted it.
When I asked LTD how they even got the account, they told me that OSI had gone bankrupt and that it was possible that they never submitted the payment notice to the creditor, which seems odd since I didn't hear from a collector for a year, but I don't know a great deal about how collections work.
Anyhow, I still don't know if this is true, but something is certainly fishy, and I'm not sure if it's with OSI, LTD, or possibly they are in collaboration together to try and get people to double pay. Truthfylly, if I weren't able to find the letter from OSI, I really don't know what would have happened. Heck, I just faxed the letter to LTD so I guess I still don't know what's going to happen.
LTD is just as bad as OSI - LTD representatives have hung up on me twice, but of course called again the very next day, "with a very important matter that it would be in my best interest to call them back on" - oh, and they wish me "luck" on their messages - nice touch.
I know that this is supposed to be about OSI, and somehow it is, becasue I did pay them, but somehow, the debt didn't get resolved, which I assume is becasue OSI didn't resolve it with the creditor. Oh, and one other thing is that the amount that LTD said I owed was 50% more than what I paid OSI.

A collection agency can file a lawsuit to collect a debt. However, among the many things a collector is not allowed to do is threaten you with a lawsuit just to get you to pay the debt. Examples of threats and deceptive practices prohibited by the FDCPA are when the collector:
- Says it will garnish your wages or sell your property if it is not legal to do that.
- Says it will sue you, if the collector doesn't intend to sue.
- Is not truthful about the amount of money you owe.
- Says you will be arrested if you don't pay the debt.
- Threatens you with violence.

I have both of these co. calling me about my debt, so them telling you that OSI went bankrupt is not true. They call me every day. LTD is just as worse. They are liars. I am way behind (my fault as well) but I paid them $50 a couple of weeks ago and they said they wouldn't call me anymore until the end of the month, they very next day I got another call and everyday since. Liars.
They will do anything to get you to pay everytime they call (it's their job) I had one lady screaming at me on the phone to (GET A JOB!) over and over again and that I am a DEADBEAT. I will not take any calls from collectors.
I wish you luck. Unfortunatly I don't have any options exect maybe filling bankruptcy myself.

GENERAL INFORMATION FROM VARIOUS SITES ON DEALING WITH COLLECTION AGENCY'S
Tell them to validate by
. What the money you say I owe is for;
Explain and show me how you calculated what you say I owe;
Provide me with copies of any papers that show I agreed to pay what you say I owe;
Provide a verification or copy of any judgment if applicable;
Identify the original creditor;
Prove the Statute of Limitations has not expired on this account
Show me that you are licensed to collect in my state
Provide me with your license numbers and Registered Agent
1. NEVER talk to a collection agency on the phone. Period.
2. Keep good records. This can be the difference between a good and bad settlement. Don't expect them to remember you or what you agreed upon.
3. Send all correspondence via registered mail, receipt requested and put the registered mail number ON THE LETTER. DO NOT SIGN THE LETTER TYPE YOUR NAME
4. Keep a copy of every letter you send.
5. Penalties and extra interest are typically fictious amounts of money added on by the collection agency to pad their profits. Sometimes as much as to 50% of the debt or more claimed to be owed by a collection agency consisting of interest and fees. This is illegal, every state has usery laws (which dictate the maximum interests allowed to be charged. That is except North Dakota. There are no such laws which is why most credit card companies incorporate there.) Junk debt buyer pay anywhere from 1 cent to 7 cents on the dollar, there is no way there is this much interest.
