I received (or as the breeder Our Lovable Labs says 'adopted') a full bred Labrador Retriever from Our Lovable Labs, in Canon GA. I searched high and low for the most reputable breeder to purchase a puppy from, since that was our decision vs getting a rescue (for various reasons, so please don't judge).
Within 4 weeks after receiving the puppy from Our Lovable Labs, we had an odd incident where the puppy fainted. He was fine by the afternoon, but I took him to the vet anyways. At that vet appointment, the vet noticed a heart murmur. We had it rechecked 2 weeks later and it was worse. An x-ray showed the heart was enlarged. A subsequent echocardiogram showed a congentical heart defect called Tricuspid Valve Dislplaysia. This is a hereditary condition which comes from the mother or the father (or both). I provided the echocardiogram reports to Our Lovable Labs. They refunded my money to me promptly, which I appreciated.
The cost of keeping this puppy alive for the next 1-3 years will be significant. In the documentation from the vet, as well as my emails to her - it was more than suggested they NOT breed the same mom and dad together again, or any siblings. Since I provided that information to the breeder, they chose to breed the same mom and dad. In addition, they are now offering breeding rights for a significant fee in addition to the $2500 for the dog. So, they are putting more of this congential heart defect into this breed, causing tremendous strain on the dogs body as well as heart break for the family's who 'adopt them'.
I will say Our Lovable Labs handled my situation correctly - however, they should not have bred those dogs together again. Both dogs should have an echocardiogram and anyone who has dogs by that mom or dad (Evie or Thunder), should request special screening from their vet. These dogs, if an issue arises, need to be on medication to sustain a quality of life, however short it might be.
