I had the recent misfortune of stopping by the Outback Pools and Spas store and interacting with one of the owners, Paul Buckingham. I went in to get some spa chemicals for a spa that I recently purchased. As I entered the store I was greeted by Mr. Buckingham. I proceeded to ask him about a particular brand of spa chemical. He informed me that they didn’t carry that particular brand but had the same chemical basis in a different brand. I told him that this particular spa had an ozonator on it…(which is designed to kill bacteria by producing ozone in the water thus reducing the need for more chemicals.)
He immediately told me I should remove it and never use it. He proceeded to tell me that they didn’t work, they were a waste of time and dangerous. He then asked me what brand of spa I purchased. I told him it was a Dr. Wellness made by RecDirect. “Oh, that is a P.O.S. spa you get off of the internet” he said. (POS is an acronym for Piece of Sh*t) Being completely taken aback by his statement, he proceeded to tell me that the ozonators that he has on his brand of Spas he sells are much better.
Mind you, after telling me that I needed to remove it because they don’t work and are dangerous for the consumer. I immediately set the bottle of chemical down that was in my hand and told him that I was offended by his statement about the spa I purchased and that I would NOT be buying anything from him EVER and frankly that I would not recommend his store to anyone. He then said “what difference does that make, you’ve not ever bought anything from me anyways!” I told him that he was wrong, I had been buying chemicals and accessories from them for years and I walked out.
I was completely offended by the way he, as an OWNER of a well-established spa business, talked to me as a customer and I believe he was upset because I didn’t buy a spa from him. Certainly not the way to treat the public. The spa I bought was from a company that is made in the USA and they will sell directly to the public…at a fraction of what one could purchase from a dealer. They are not “POS” spas and carry a factory warranty and a very good reputation. Coincidently, the Sundance Spas that he carries, are made in Mexico.

Outback has been our sole vendor for pool supplies and accessories since 2003. We have never had any experience with the owners or any of their employees other than their being helpful, informative and courteous. Fourteen years is a long time. Outback deserves to have more consideration than a single disgruntled customer during a single encounter. I have witnessed enough poor behavior by customers in my life not to take a single complaint at face value. So far, I have only seen a single complaint.
