A representative came to my door the other afternoon and said their company was making a "good will gesture" to the neighborhood by providing a free inspection of my home. He said they would provide a writeup of everything that needed repairs so that I could show it to any contractor who was doing an estimate in the future. I should have known right away this was a scam because the rep said he'd lived in my town for 15 years, but after talking to him a couple minutes he admitted he didn't know the town at all. He said that if I ever chose to redo the outside of my house "in 18 months, two years," to keep Pacific Home Remodeling in mind. He said the inspection would take 20 minutes and that they would just look around the outside of the house.

That evening, a young man came with a suitcase and a bag. He came in, we chatted, and then looked at the house. It was already well after dark, and he could only look with a flashlight. He saw some mildew at the base of my house and told me it was black mold, and that if the state mold inspector saw it he'd condemn my house! Despite this absurdity I let him finish.

When we went back in, he went through a really long sales pitch for his product. He told me that he could only guarantee the price he was going to give me for three months, not 18 (which I'd never agreed to in the first place), because of the condition of the house. All I really wanted at this point was an estimate, to get an idea of how much I would need to spend to make repairs, so I told him I had no intention of doing any repairs for at least six months. He agreed to extend his offer for six months, and I said OK. Then he started hard-sell pressuring me into signing a contract that evening. I told him no, he made another pitch, I told him no, he made another pitch, I told him there was nothing he could say that would make me sign anything. Then he said he had to call his manager, and when he did he said something like "I told him he's got black mold but he doesn't want to do it." I could hear the manager yelling at him to close the deal, and at that point I told the rep to get out of my house.

The product this company sells might be a good one, but their sale tactics are highly disreputable. I would never make an appointment with one of their representatives. I particulary didn't like being lied to about the mold and the nonsense about my house being condemned for it.
