I am from the UK and thought I'd view some free porn sites. I had to provide my credit card details to verify my age not knowing I'd be charged. Its taken me 5 months to find the website I had visited so I can chase them up on this. I will never ever provide my details again on ANY web site for age verification again. Be warned its hassel that is not needed, especially from overseas.

There is no such thing as using a credit card for "age verification". Being that a kid can swipe his parents card, this is a totally useless and fabricated explanation for why they want credit card information.

If anyone wants credit card info, or bank account info, THEY WILL BE USING IT TO TAKE MONEY FROM YOU.

If it says "free (you pay shipping)" - I would never trust them. I don't trust any company that wants my payment information for something FREE.

If you just GOTTA HAVE IT, whatever it might be, see if you can send a money order (not sure if that's viable from the UK or not), but more than likely, no, no company will want you to do that, they will insist they "need" your payment info.

If you are told that a money order will be fine, strongly suspect it will get "lost" upon arrival at their office.

You can use a pre-paid debit card, with EXACTLY that amount on it, that's one possible way to get around it, but if you like to do a lot of free offers, that could get troublesome to keep track of.

If something's truly FREE, they do not ask for payment information, for any reason. I HAVE done free stuff, but they sure do want you to upgrade, relentlessly!

If they ask for payment info, THEY WILL BE USING IT.

Sorry this happened to you, I really am.
