One of the internet sellers I was dealing with doesn't accept Canadian credit cards and advised me to buy Paysafe card and pay through it. Actually this should have been a 'red flag' but I decided to buy these Paysafe cards at Canada Post. These are not like a prepaid Visa or Master Cards but just a PIN printed on the receipt. I was told by Canada Post staff not to lose these PINs as these are just like bearer checks and whoever has the PIN has access to cash.

When I tried to use the Paysafe cards at the site of the internet seller a message popped up telling me that for ‘security reasons’ my PINs were frozen and was asked to fill in various details including uploading a copy of my government issued ID along with copies of those PINs. Without realizing the trap I did all this.

Next day I got an email from the Customer Service of Paysafecard with a reference number 05139887 that I should send a “photo” of my government issued ID like passport or driver’s license and instruction of ‘documents should not be scanned’. This was definitely a ‘red signal’,

i)                   Why would a company say scanned documents are not acceptable?

ii)                Why a company needs government issued documents for something that’s purchased on cash and supposed to be a prepaid card??

I responded back to this email letting them know that I have already uploaded the scanned documents and refused to send a photo of my government issued ID again. Not surprisingly I got a response from this company letting me know that they need a photo of my government issued ID, with a comment that “otherwise your case will not be taken into consideration”. I decided not to continue falling in to this trap further and decided to lose my money as cost of dealing with an unscrupulous company like this.

I want to publish this on Ripoff Report site so that at least whoever reads this will be careful and not deal with this company. In the days of identity thefts we have to be extremely careful with whom we are sharing government issued IDs. Hope my attempt at least saves some people from falling in to this trap of Paysafe Cards.
