Decided to buy a used but restored 80 El Camino from Classic cars .com and the seller advertised it as having a new crate engine, new auto transmission, new A/C, new rear end, new paint and in like new condiion all over. Since this was out of state and it would have to be shipped I was leery about wireing funds to a sranger so I saw the ad for PaySafe. Paysafe is an escrow company who holds you money until you check the vehicle out and tell them it is as adveritised and they can release the funds to the seller.
A it turned out this vehicle did not have a new engine, transmission ( which would not shift correctly) or A/C and the rusted wheel wells had been painted over in an apparant effort to hide them. Chrome was coming off the bumpers, rust was forming on the wheels and lots of molding was coming loose on the car. Drove it less than 3 miles to the service center to have it Va inspected, serviced with Mobile One Syn oil/filter since the seller sent no paperwork with it even though he told me he had it all. I paid for the shipping here to me $500.00, service was $175.00, Inspection and tail light repair $35.00, tank of gas (it was on empty ) $55.00 and the title and tag fees at Virginia DMV was $500.00. Left the service center to come home and the motor overheated and I had to call for the roll back wrecker (I have auto club so this did not cost). Mechanic told me that this was the original radiator, over 35 years old and was rusted out and would have to be replaced and since the vehicle had a larger engine it should be replaced with a HD aluminum radiator which would cost (with installation, hoses, thermostat ) about $600.00.
I contacted the seller and told him about the probelms and he told me I was just too picky and to just drive the car and not worry about the rust. He said if I fixed it I would never get my money out of it later anyway. I told him that I was going to ask for my money to be transferredback to my bank account and he could havethe car pickedup. AT which point he told me that I would have to paay to have it shipped back to him if I didn't want it. I advised that this vehicle had already cost me over $1400.00 and this was funds that I would never get back and if he thought I was going to pay to ship the car back that was not as advertised he was crazy. He hung up on me after a few choice curse words about me eating the car and he would not pay to ship it back.
I contacted PaySafe told them about the probelms in detail and requested that my funds be transferred back into my bank account asap so I could look for another vehicle locally. I also was the one who paid the Paysafe fee $120.00 because the seller refused to split it with me. The next day I checked the Paysafe website to see if my funds had been transferred and was advised that the decision was "Pending"?? So I wrote a letter and asked what was with the pending issue when this was the eason why I paid to use Paysafe to start with ! Later I received a call froma rep advising me that the seller had to approve for them to give me my funds back or else it could not happen? Now this guy is pissed (sorry) because I am sending the vehicle back and now I know why he did not want to use Paysafe to start with because he knew the car was not as advertised and was trying to rip me off yet Paysafe needs his permission to transfer my funds back to me because the car was a junker and not as advertised ( and they have the ad link and the desciption on thier site). So I guess this means I will have to hire a lawyer and fight to get my money back from this company and the jerk who tried to rip me off. I just think any of you out there who are thinking about using this Paysafe thing should really give it a hard second look before you end up in the same kind of situation like I am. I don't even know now if this is a valid company or not after the way they responded to me about this car deal and if my funds are really in an escrow account and with the internet you never really know what is what until you get to digging. Just be careful who you trust even if you pay them for a service.
