I have tried to buy a boat in Florida through the broker POP Yachts. I made an offer by email and received an enormous contract which in the depths of the text it made clear that I was expected to pay almost $400 as a one off payment for various services, non of which I would need.

POP Yachts charges the seller 10% which in this case would have been $2300 for doing nothing but for which I accept they are entitled to for advertizing etc. However, I have purchased boats throughout the world and have never had to pay a fee as the buyer. This is a ripoff.

POP Yachts have since told the owner that I have not made an offer, which is untrue. As I understand it, the seller is going to remove his vessel from the POP Yachts listing as he has lost a sale and he had no idea that potential buyers were being asked to pay for the privilage of buying his boat when he was paying the customary fee for the complete service in any event.

This is a practice that must be stopped, if people refuse to pay, as I did, this broker and other like them will soon stop this nonsense.

POP Yachts Closing Fee

AUTHOR: POP Yachts - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, April 02, 2015

POP Yachts completely understands your reservation, but we want to assure you that we are completely legitimate and have no intent to deceive or rip anyone off. POP Yachts is a licensed and bonded yacht brokerage.  We have been very fortunate to have sold over 3,500 vessels in the 6 years we have been operating and have many happy customers.  The fees we charge are industry standard and fully disclosed in our documentation, as you pointed out.  Our closing fee covers many services that one would typically hire an outside agency or law firm to perform, such as title searches, document shipping,

ensuring all funds are received and cleared into our secure escrow account and that any liens are paid off, having proper endorsement of all documents to ensure legal transfer of the vessel, and we provide a dedicated professional closing coordinator to ensure a smooth and hassle free experience. POP Yachts closing fee is not charged until the closing of the transaction occurs. POP Yachts apologizes that our closing fee has caused you to feel the way that you do, but hopefully this response will help you understand the value and legitimacy of our fee.  We wish you the best in your boat search.
