I was walking down Michigan Ave. in Chicago when I was stopped by a high school girl holding a D.A.R.E. T-shirt. She claimed to be collecting donations for D.A.R.E. Like an idiot, I gave her my debit card because I had no cash on me. Normally I wouldn't do something like this, but she definitely played on my emotions. She was out there in the freezing cold and was collecting money for a good cause.

The debit card slip that I signed didn't have the D.A.R.E. logo. It was just a generic slip, which I thought was weird, but then I just brushed it off. There are still people, such as cab drivers, who are legitimate and use generic credit card slips.

The next day I checked my bank account and saw Powerhoutz Promotions as the merchant name. They took the amount that I authorized. However, I still didn't feel right about it, so I googled them and found that their name came up repeatedly on Ripoff Report. I immediately called my bank and cancelled my debit card.

I thought I was in the clear. But then another transaction for the same amount came through on my account under Taylormade Promotions. I cannot believe the nerve of these people!

I'm waiting on a response from D.A.R.E. whether or not they are affiliated with, or accepting donations from, Powerhoutz or Taylormade. I doubt it. I can live with losing $30. But what is absolutely inconceivable is that these people would use a charity to steal from the public! Why hasn't their operation been shut down yet?

What to watch for when dealing with "Charitable" Street Soliciters

AUTHOR: Rhonda - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 14, 2007

Dear Sadie,

I am a former employee of a company very similiar to the one you described. I am sorry for your trouble. I was employed for TaylorMade Promotionz based out of Glenview and from what I am told sold merchandise at various events and gave 20% back to their preferred charity which was the CPEA.

The girl that stopped probably wasn't a high school student. She might have been a recent college dropout. These companies hire good looking, very young and energetic personalities to help play on others' emotions. I am sure that the sales agent did not use the word "donation", if so he risks that companys' opportunity to solicit funds within the state of Illinois. Donation implies that 100% of the money is going to the charity. The agent can not accept anything less that what the items are priced. So, if he tells you that he is accepting contributions in $5.00 increments then what he REALLY saying is the cheapest item he can sell you is for $5.00. A true donation can be accepted in any amount not matter how big or small. I felt terrible having to turn away $1 and $2 donations because if I accepted these and were caught I woud be fired and the company would be liable for charity fraud.

I am sure he sold you an item and charged sales tax. These people are just selling things to get rich. That is what they sold to me and other agents when we went to work every morning. They told us that people are rather stupid and very impulsive. So we were trained to talk fast, quickly get to the point, and ask questions that would engage a quick response.
