I sent my Cybershot Sony DSC-HX20V to Precision Camera on Thursday, February 27th after prepaying and ordering a box with a UPS label to come for easy shipment on February 24th for $125. The box casme right away and I was given a web number to track it throughout the process. According to the UPS tracking, the box containing my camera was received on March 4th. When I checked my web tracking number, the camera had disappeared from the radar screen sort to speak because I got a red message saying that the camera could not be found. I called them about this and they said that the camera had to be assessed. When I had not heard back from them and still saw that the camera was untraceable, I sent them a message via contact form on March 10th. I got a response saying that my camera was still being assessed. Then I got a message today saying that the price for my camera repair was re-estimated due to an increase in parets costs. I figured before finishing reading the e-mail that maybe I would have to pay an additional $25-50, which would have been bad enough, but I was given an estimate of $325! That's about triple the original estimate! Parts did not increase 300% in two weeks time! Bull****! They could have at least said that my camera had more damage than originally estimated, but they could not even honestly tell me that and instead concocted some bogus excuse! I did not even pay $300 for the camera. For a place with such a professional presentation, I never would have imagined being so deluded by this company. I had sent the camera to this place since it was advertised that I would save money over in store repair costs and because they quoted and charged in advance a relatively small fee and promised a fast and easy turnaround. I paid the $100 since other camera shops charge more and since I cannot afford to buy another camera because of my tight budget. I do not see any fine print anywhere stating that the estimate is subject to increase. The price they charge for prepaid repairs should be the price you get through andf through without surprises! I thought they had to be reputable since they had been in business since 1948. Why would they give me a price and have me prepay for my repair and then change it on me without warning? That is so unjust and unfair! It's not a quote if I have already paid. It's not like insurance, because at least you don't pay first! The experience I had was certainly not what I expected! They have fallen way short in meeting my expectations! I am a very disatisfied customer. Anyway, I replied when they gave me the re-estimate and told them point blank "You cannot triple jack up the price like that! I already paid $125 for the repair plus the shipping label!" I have not gotten a response. I replied in a bold way like most people probably would not. I will be calling them tomorrow to request a repair at the original price since I prepaid, challenging them by asking them how the cost of parts could triple in 2 weeks time! If they can't do that, I will request a refund and to send the camera back. If they refuse to do either, I will file with the BBB, and if that doesn't work, I will continue to turn up the heat and contact my local consumer affairs office and/or the Consumer Protection Agency.

Update

AUTHOR: Janet - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, March 12, 2014

I could not find an update feature. I thought there was onhe. The only way to update this was to reply with the rebuttal feature. Anyway, I was wrong about the prepay. I found this out this morning when I called them. They do not charge you until they quote the repairs and you give them permission. So in a sense it is like an insurance quote. It is still very sneaky. When I spoke to the person this morning she strongly stated that my camera needed $300 worth of parts. You might as well sell me a whole new camera then! I asked for the camera back. She agreed to over the phone. We shall see how well that goes. I hope to find somwplace who will repair my camera for not much more than a hundred dollars, since I cannot afford more than that.
