The numerous typos should have been a red flag, but allowed them to "play the game".  I opened my messenger, found Mr. Tony Nelson. His interview asked me my wpm and kpm.  Then he told me I would receive a check in a week to cover the cost of equipment needed for the job. Today, he IMed me again, this time informing me that the check was over-nighted through UPS and gave me the following instructions:

Thought I should let him think that I was unsuspecting of his scam. When I did a mapquest of the Atlanta address, it is in the midst of abandoned buildings.

UPS hasn't got here yet but I am going to refuse the package.  How do we get these people off the streets?

I don't think there's a way to get rid of these people. Like you, I've played along with the scam just to jerk their chain.  I've come up with several ways to let them hang themselves. For instance, there's one scam where they send you the check so you can evaluate the Western Union services. I told them to just send me the check through Western Union and we could do the evaluation when I pick up the check. That stopped them cold :-)

In another case, I had someone respond to my posting of adoptable puppies. They sent me a "check" to cover the delivery, in which I was to cash the check and send a few thousand dollars to "their" animal transportation service. I kept them going for a few weeks by telling them I had arranged for transportation on my own. They fought me tooth and nail trying to convince me that "their" service was better.

In your case, I think I would've told them that you could purchase all that equipment through a local vendor at a cheaper price once the check cleared.  Then they have no recourse.

In all of the scams I've played along with, I've contacted the name on the check and the bank that supposedly issued the check.  One was a school district in another state that had already opened an investigation because of the number of calls like mine they had received. I guess there are other people like me who are sick of these scammers.

The best thing we can do is to keep filing rip off reports so that more and more people are aware of this activity. Once the scammers can't find any more gullible people they might move on.

It's turning into a crappy world, isn't it?
