I, like many others on here purchased the expensive Prestone brand only because there was a rebate that made it comparable in price to the generic.  I used both bottles, peeled the rebate forms off and placed them on my workbench with the receipt.  I even kept the empty bottles in the garage thinking maybe I would need to cut out the barcode.  Two weeks later I went to complete the rebate form and read the fine print that you have to have the foil seal from the bottle top.  Well OF COURSE, I threw those away when I used the antifreeze, that is what everyone would do.  So, I came to the internet to see what I could find out.  I see that some have posted on here that Prestone now says they will honor this without the foil seal.  Well that is just great for those of us who bother to research ripoffs on the internet. But, I'm sure Prestone knows most people will just trash the rebate form when they read that they need the foil seal which has been discarded.  OK, so Prestone will now honor the rebate, but I will forever view them as an unscrupulous company due to their obvious intent to deceive the very people that are purchasing their products.  Also, thanks to others who posted the parent company information.  Now I know to beware of Fram and Honeywell also.  Next time I'll just buy the generic brand.

Why the foil for proof of purchase?

AUTHOR: Mark - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, March 04, 2012

I am in the same situation.  I purchased the antifreeze on my way to work, and used the entire container.  I saved the jug and receipt for the rebate.  The next day, I went to complete the paperwork and found out that the foil cover was needed.  Who or why would you even think about saving the foil cover?  This is an obvious and planned fraud against the consumer.  I have submitted the rebate offer with the original receipt and a letter explaining why the foil is not present.  My decision to purchase Prestone products going forward is based on what happens with this rebate.  Either way, I think this proof of purchase criteria was a poor , almost fradulent, way of lowering the rebate return rate.
