I could not agree more with JB's Ripoff Report about Private Workout on Preston Rd., in Plano. Last summer, I went into the gym with intentions of signing up for the boot camp that was advertised in a local newspaper, hoping that it would supplement what I was doing at the time. I walked out with the same protein shakes and contractual commitment JB agreed to. I should have listened to my intuition while I was being sold on the same mechanically recited pitch JB endured.

For the past 9 months, I have felt like a big SUCKER for signing up with this cookie cutter program that is sold as high intensity, efficient, and audience-free; however, it is without a doubt boring, repetitive, and negatively stimulating. I completed 18/100 workouts from June to November 2007, I have not been back since. Not one person from Private Workout has called to find out why I have not been there. It is my opinion that Private Workout does not have the best interest of their clientele in mind in terms of individualizing programs that are safe for all types of gym goers and member satisfaction and retention.

I gave up everything I enjoyed about working out when I joined Private Workout. I begrudgingly cancelled my membership with another fitness club (an easy process, compared to this one) that offered a variety of classes, a great locker room, and the same amount of support in terms of learning the equipment and educating me on ways to style my own fitness program without hiring a fitness trainer. I also cancelled working out with partners, which promoted accountability to my fitness routine, as well as flexibility in the hours of operation.

Private Workout wants me to pay $323 to quit my agreement. This amount includes $199 cancellation free, $36 per month for three months (90 day cancellation notice), plus tax. It is my understanding that Private Workout justifies the $199 cost by stating it as a "loan" to the client for the 100 workouts, after completing the 100 workouts, the monthly dues drop to $8 per month all of this on top of the $36 per month that you pay while you are trying to complete the 100 workouts! Even though I have been encouraged to complete the remainder of my 100 workouts to avoid having to pay the high cancellation dues; I simply can not stand the thought of walking through the doors, again. I do not want to hear the sales pitch being delivered to new victims, over and over; I do not want to carry that clip board from room to room while trying to manage equipment settings; I do not want to hear that recording every minute to tell me "Let's get skinny! Let's go, let's go!"

This contract is one of the most regretful decisions I have ever made. I deserve what I get for falling into this trap, but please use my experience in considering what you really want out of a fitness facility and workout program. I will certainly remember that shady businesses like to lock in their clients with unreasonable and difficult contracts so they can get their money. I do not feel that anyone from Private Workout has gone above and beyond in trying to mend their relationship and reputation with me; therefore, I can not whole-heartedly recommend Private Workout's program and services. Buyers beware!

Just because you got bored working out (everyone does!) does not make us a bad business!

Since Shanna has chosen not to identify himself, it's hard for us to comment on his case, however, I will attempt to explain our memberships. We offer a number of programs but we have two primary ones. First is the REWARD program, where a customer pays a $199 membership fee, then $33 per month, and can cancel with a 30 day written notice. Then we offer something no other gym in the world offers: we ask the customer to set a body fat goal, in the range from 15% to 25% body fat; if the customer achieves the goal while a member with us, we REFUND THE MEMBERSHIP FEE! Then we drop your rate to $13 per month to maintain your fitness! We do that so you have an incentive to reach your goal!

The counterpart membership to this is the PUNISHMENT plan. It has the same $199 membership fee and $33 per month, but instead of paying it up front, we LOAN it to you! If you reach your goal, we will WAIVE it and drop your rate to just $13 per month! If you quit before reaching the goal, you have to pay it when you cancel... We offer this so that you can set up a "punishment" for yourself so that you stay working out until you reach your goal! After all, don't you join a gym to get in shape?

Both plans are popular, since few other gyms besides Private Workout even seem to care if you get fit after they get your money.... About half our members choose the REWARD plan and half the PUNISHMENT plan.

It appears that Shanna chose the Punishment plan. Apparently she wants to quit, not because we did anything wrong, but because she is getting bored workout out (as many of us do!) and does not want to pay the membership fee we loaned her.

We have never had a complaint like this from a member who purchased the REWARD plan, where they pay the membership up front! In fact, most of our PUNISHMENT PLAN members who do not reach their goal realize it is because they did not come and do their workout, not because we did something wrong. The few that cancel cheerfully pay the fee, being glad they had not had to pay it in the beginning! But we offer this plan because we want you to stay and actually reach your goal!

In this case, Shanna spends most of her time saying that she was bored with our workout system, and she makes many unsubstatiated and unsupported claims that have nothing to do with the real issue, which apparently is the most important to her, the fact that she does not want to pay what she promised. We have lived up to our end of the agreement, apparently she thinks she should not have to live up to hers...

She worked out for months with us, so we must not have been so bad! While she says we don't care about our members, she also states that she was "encouraged" to finish her workout plan (by us!). What gym does that? Most gyms have no workout plan!

We have a unique and effective workout plan where you workout in private, don't require a workout "buddy" to be accountable, and it's all over in 30 minutes or less! While our workout plan may not be for everyone, we have had THOUSANDS of happy customers over the 5 years we have been in business. Maybe it will be right for you...!
