This company uses a contract that automatically renews itself beyond the initial period stated at the top of the contract. I believe that they misrepresented the contract by not pointing out this unusual provision.

The contract has signature spaces at the bottom of the front page. The paragraph about automatic renewal appears on the back of same. If you read the fine print closely, it does tell you to read the back before signing.

Does it seem odd that such an important provision of this contract is hidden in fine print on the back? Does it seem odd that the salesperson wouldn't point out such an important provision?

I called and complained and told the representative that I thought the salesperson had misrepresented the contract. The representative asked me why I hadn't read the entire contract before I signed. I said to him, "So you think this is just a case of Let the Buyer Beware." The company representative said, "Yes, and that's the law too."

The company made no attempt to justify this practice, only to note that it is technically legal. Shame on them.

#4 Consumer Suggestion

Read contracts before you sign them!

I work for an ADT dealer and have worked for Brinks Home Security. All security monitoring agreements are automatically renewed annually for one year after the term of the agreement. you have to cancel within 30 days of the end of the agreement or it will automatically renew for one year. Read before you sign!!!! I have only had one customer in the last year read their paperwork before they signed it. I have to tell every customer to read it first and then sign. Also, shame on the salesperson for not telling you that the agreement automatically renews. I can tell you that most sales people are lazy and weak and are afraid to tell you of any fine print. It is an absolute must that you read before you sign anything period!
