It is heartbreaking to hear about any type of corruption in an institution but it is worse when you know of the suffering it is causing others. Prof Murray continuously incubates a form of elitism and hierarchy in his staff, with the effects trickling down to the students. The exceptionally high turnover of staff is frightening and a constant change in professors mean no stability in curriculum or teaching for the students. It result in poor grades and a sub par education. There is very much the 'it' crowd, and other supporting staff are ostracized in important decision making. I refer to his previous articles where he speaks of working with other universities in Cuba, Canada, etc. What he will not divulge is the handsome sums of money ('donations') that he receives from these agreements. In addition to the many Business Class trips he takes with university money. The selection process since his institution as Dean is also questionable. Among having the lowest ranking performance of medical students in Australia he seems to adopt a socialist attitude. Therefore if his students are under-performing due to poor selection he claims it is alright because they have humanistic qualities. JCU medical students have too much empathy, not enough anatomy as we say in the wards. I would not be surprised if students with lower scores that gain entry to JCU are picked out of nepotism as opposed to actually honoring any socialist attitude that he portrays.

This brings me to the most disturbing point of all. His social engineering strategy seems to be a failure. Sexual harassment, rape, predatory behavior by staff and students alike are the norm and such behavior is quickly swept under the rug. It has got to the extent that students are even threatened with disciplinary action if they try to make a complaint. In the vast majority complaint processes he is judge, jury and executor along with Prof Ian Wronski - the ultimate puppet masters - and no one wishes to go against them. This fear of reprisal is very different from the accepting and humanistic facade he gives to the public. The medical school has suffered greatly under his leadership. Poor performance, mistreatment of staff and promotion of a culture that encourages rape and sexual harassment are the only things that Prof Murray has brought to his corrupt leadership. I think it is high time JCU looks into his conduct and dealings. But knowing they look out for each other it might be a stretch. Prof Murray is the shining example of the old saying; power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
