I have been an excellent customer of providian financial for more than 6 years. I have NEVER paid late and have always maintained my record with them. Providian promised me the moon and stars. My visa classic account is not bad with an interest rate of 16.9%, however, my emerge mastercard (previously called aria and getsmart) currently has an interest rate of 29.99%.

I called and was told too bad even though they promised to lower the rate after owning the card for one year with no late payments which I did. Well the interest rate lowering never happened and went up to 29.99%. Anyone who follows providian can see that since their stock price dropped into the toilet, they have been screwing their good customers knowing that whatever they do, the good ones will pay.

I had my credit limit reduced even though I paid for it and they will not return the money paid for the increase. Now, the customer service department is in Bombay, India with people that barely speak english. My only hope is to now contacting a debt service so that they can get my interest rate reduced. If I need to, I will file bankruptcy so that providian gets NOTHING. I intend on sending a leter to all other of my creditors and giving out providians address explaining that providian is the reason why they will be getting a lesser amount or nothing with bankruptcy.

There is a way out. After being past due for several months

AUTHOR: Branden - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 19, 2003

I was a victim of the providian emerge switch. There is a way out. After being past due for several months because the company kept piling on charges, they contacted me with an offer. I was offered to repay my balance interest free, no yearly or late fees. Contact the company and ask for this.

Calling to lower APR

AUTHOR: Elizabeth - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, October 23, 2003

In response to the gentleman's suggestion to call Providian to ask for a lower rate...don't waste your time. I have attempted this and failed. I consider myself a fairly persuasive person (having interned at the Attorney General's office)but was unable to impress upon him that lowering my rate was good for business. My credit repayment has been stellar with this company for years (with the exception of the first) and I asked that he consider this. He looked in the computer and said there were no lower rates at this time and if something came available they would send it in the mail. When I pressed him, he said that it was against "policy" to lower rates when consumers inquired and if a lower rate became available it would arrive in the mail. When I explained to him that this would mean I would tranfer the balance to another card and close this account, he basically told me to do it because he couldn't do anything for me. I've decided to keep this credit card only because it looks good on my credit report due to the long history, but I am paying this off ASAP.

Providian and Emerge are Con Artists

AUTHOR: Lee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, October 16, 2003

Beware of Providian and Emerge MC.

I cancelled my Provisian Account because they raised my APR after five years of on time payments. So to retaliate, they sold my account to Emerge MC. Emerge MC attempted to raise my APR, but New York's Attorney General named them a predator lender and sued until they kept the NY consumer's APR at the fixed introductory rates.

During the conversion of my account from Providian to Emerge, I sent in an electronic payment and now they are pointing fingers at each othere claiming that the other company lost the payment. It has been over three weeks and I have been on the telephone each day with Providian and Emerge. The Customer Service Representatives from India can't understand a word of English.

If there is ever a class action suit against Emerge and Providian, please contact me. I am actually contacting my company's attorney to see what he can do to retrieve my money from Emerge.

They are total Con Artists.

little helpful advice

AUTHOR: Jessi - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, September 07, 2003

Okay, understandably you are mad. Listen, credit card companies sell their accounts all the time. As I understand it, that particular conversion was pretty rough. Not to sound like an advocate for emerge, but it is possible to get the apr lowered with this company. My suggestion would be to call them and ask them what they could do for you as a customer.

I AM PISSED

AUTHOR: Delia - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, June 01, 2003

I too had a Providain card..my very first. A year later they write me telling me that part of the company is closing down and this Emerge has bought over my ac....no big deal.. now almost a year later I realise that my balance is not getting any lower and I dont even have a card therefore they are no purchases on my account ..but.... I for the first time really reviewed my bill and low an behold...I am being charged 29.99% and don not even have use of the card. I am told my account is closed and I am paying off a balance @ 29.99% interest. I was shocked. I called them and was treated very disrespectfully. I owe the about 1800.00 now I cant wait to get them out of my check book.

Providian cancelled my card ..Go Figure! All these companies are rip-off artists!

AUTHOR: Michael - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 20, 2003

After being approved for an Aria card, which subsequently became "Get Smart", Providian advised that they would raise my limit to $2300 by paying $90 which I did. There was NEVER a late payment and the account was PAID in FULL every month. They cancelled my account and out of the clear blue I received a statement from Emerge. Naturally there is no phone number on the statement and so I wrote them 3x Certified RRR and they have been unable to prove indebtedness.

I complained to the controller of currency but was given a run-around. My associate also has a Providian card also with problem credit and because he always had a balance, they presumably were able to make their interest money, it was never cancelled and transferred to Emerge as mine had been.

Funny thing is that from the time that Providian opened the account until it was closed, my credit score improved dramatically. Go Figure! All these companies are rip-off artists!
