We purchased a home on July 31, 1996. We took out the death benefit so if anything happened to my husband or myself the house would be paid off.

My husband passed away on February 15, 2008 and I applied for the death benefit. It was refused because he died of natural causes. They stated we only had accidental death.

We have paid $42.92 to our mortgage company for the last 12 years and were always told it was a death benefit we were paying for. Our mortgage has been sold 3 times, but we were never contacted to tell us of any changes.

I am now faced with the financial burden of paying $ 1300.00 per month. I do not even make that much.

I am grieving enough and the emotional stress is driving me crazy. Why do insurance companies have to prey on the misfortune of other people. I am paying off his medical bills due to his cancer and now this. I just don'tknow which way to go.

Sorry for your loss

AUTHOR: Tlk - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, May 28, 2008

As an insurance agent I go into many homes where the husband and wife both say "We're covered with our mortgage loan".....that's crap! Lenders ONLY carry accidental. It's a marketing scheme that leads you to believe in the event of death (of any sort) your mortgage will be paid off. I'm very sorry for your loss and feel for the road your having to go down but if you could do one thing it would be to tell others of your situation and encourage them to sit down with a life agent to get their future in order. If it's over the phone, internet or a lending institution - BEWARE. Get with an agent to put you in a plan that is in your best interest. You could have gotten a term or a permanent plan for the 42 a month you threw away. Again, sorry for your loss.

Victim of the unfair decision

I am the surving spouse. We were the owners of the property and the holders of the mortgage. Liberty Life was the insurance provider for the death benefit. This policy had been sold 3 or 4 times before the current mortgage company. When we took out the mortgage it was to include the death benefit. Meaning if I or my husband passed away the mortgage would be paid off. They are now saying that isn't what we had. They are saying we had accidental death.

I feel for you, but did you not read what you were signing ?? Do you have your copy of the original ? What does it say - Accidental Death Benefit ??? Well, that IS a death benefit ! If so, the only person who ripped you off was YOU by not reading what you signed.
