I had gotten into a car accident (which totaled my '05 Cavalier) just 2 months after moving to CO. I won't get into the details of the accident, but needless to say we were in need of another vehicle pretty quickly. My credit took a nosedive shortly after securing financing on my Cavalier (interest rate was 7% on that). I knew we were going to be in for trouble acquiring a loan on another vehicle. I remember seeing the commercials for Bar None on the TV, and decided to give them a call.
Me and my husband bought a "99 Dodge Intrepid from these guys in June of 2006. The car had only some minor body blemishes ... no biggie ... i wasn't concerned. My only request was a decent car with a CD player (sounds vain ... but really that's all i wanted). They told us over the phone that we were approved and the vehicle they had set to offer us was the Intrepid...
Their asking price was 1,000+ more than KBB suggested for a "fair" vehicle of that type. They were willing to honor KBB's asking price. Our interest rate was .. 21%... omg ouch.
On the way home (yes that same day, of course) white smoke was coming from the exhaust, saw a CD stuck in the CD player (it did not work), car was overheating, shimmy in the steering wheel. Ok - since the car was a 'last-ditch' effort in trying to re-establish our credit ... we decided to fix the car up. The radiator had been bled of fluid (there were no leaks ... still are no leaks ... yet it was nearly empty), the AC worked for the 1st day ... we got the system checked and finding NO LEAK had it recharged. The mechanic that serviced the car said it appeared like the freon was removed recently (since it did work for the 1st day, there was freon on the compressor still).
The car is now paid off, I called to trade it in for something newer .. and hoping for a better interest rate (since we made every payment on time). The salesman said the best they could do would be 19-21% again. My credit is not any worse - in fact a little bit better due to the successful loan we endured.
I like to think of people as being good and decent. I would like to give them a second chance, but I am unwilling to go through 2+ more years paying an interest rate like that again. My husband has a fabulous job making 80k+ a year, and has been there 20+ years. So someone explain to me why this was so hard for us to get a second loan at a better rate.
I guess the best I can say in reference to Bar None is that they DO help people with tricky credit situations - if you are willing to pay the price that goes along with that. It's a steep price tag and very belittling situation to receive a vehicle that has been drained of freon and antifreeze. I'm sure they value their customers and never look down upon them *subtle eye roll* it felt like a slap in the face at the time.
