I had a house fire on 2/17/2016, and while the fire was happening, I was told that the Red Cross would give me assistance.

Because I lived in Picayune, MS, my nearest branch was the Hattiesburg branch.

First of all, it took about four days for anyone to return my phone calls.  Once I finally got in contact with someone, I was questioned about why I waited so long after the fire... well, because I kept calling, and nobody would return my phone calls!

Finally, someone met with me, who I later learned was NOT my case manager.  So, obviously, I never knew who my case manager was.  This person filled out paperwork and asked me a bunch of questions.

One thing I was told during this meeting, was that counseling would be available to me through the Red Cross, as I stated during the meeting that I wished I had died in the fire.  This turned out to be untrue.  The day after the meeting, I got a followup call, and asked the caller about how to set up the counseling I was told would be available to me.  Her response was "huh?"  She didn't know what I was talking about, or why I was told that.

Another thing I was told during this meeting, was that I would be given assistance with my first month's rent, when I found another place to live.  I SPECIFICALLY asked if there was a statute of limitations for this assistance, and I was told NO.  After three weeks of nobody returning my phone calls, I found out that is also untrue, because once 30 days have passed, you don't get any help, even if it takes more than 30 days to find an affordable place to live.  Exactly WHEN were they planning to tell me this?  I tried for about 3 weeks to get in contact with someone!

Finally somebody answered the number that I had received a follow-up call from.  She didn't know why I was even calling her, because after all, the fire happened in February, and Red Cross doesn't help people with fires more than 30 days ago.

I need to make a formal complaint about the Hattiesburg chapter of the Red Cross, because of the grave misinformation I was given, resulting in my being denied help for my disaster.  If indeed one has a 30 day limit for assistance with the Red Cross, it was a grave negligence to tell me otherwise, keeping in mind that some of us actually cannot find another place to live within 30 days.

I also need to formally complain about the complete lack of communication on the part of that chapter.  If ti takes four days for someone to bother to return my phone calls, they should not have implied that I was lying about my need for asisstance since the fire was four days ago.  It also took three weeks of unreturned phone calls, for someone to even bother to tell me about the 30 day limit that had already passed.

Please advise.

Update, apparently going to the media works

AUTHOR: - ()

So it took me actually contacting the local media, but finally the Red Cross headquarters bothered to contact me, and put me in touch with another nearby chapter in Gulfport, MS.

They stated that they needed "evidence" that I was actually in a house fire resulting in the house being unlivable.  Well, I had ample proof of that, between the fire report, and the actual site of the fire showing that the house was no longer there.  Of course, had they returned my phone calls to begin with, I could have easily provided the same information.

Then it took a couple more weeks of more unreturned phone calls, but finally I got the tiny bit of help I was qualified to receive.

It's a shame I had to actually go to the media before anybody would listen.

Yes, the RC SHOULD be held accountable for their treatment of this person. They run on donations- donations they are given to help people in exactly the position the commenter is in. If they are ignoring or misrepresenting themselves then it is definitely something they should answer for. And by not answering the phone continously and not calling people back, they are taking donations and then not delivering on the promises they make to get people to donate. Do you think people would give them money if they said "Well, we mght help you in the event of a disaster. If we decide to call you back, that is". I seriously doubt it. I have given money to the RC before myself and if they are taking donations in god faith then they must at least attempt to deliver. It sounds like they have not in this situation and this definitely isn;t the first time.

If you had actually read my report...

OK, let me attempt to address this mattress stain who clearly has no clue what he's talking about:

If you had actually read my report, you would know that I made every effort to initiate contact with the red cross.  What part of "unreturned phone calls" do you not understand?

I absolutely want them to find out exactly who I am.  What are they going to do, send the mafia after me?  As a member of the community from whom they solicit donations, I absolutely do have an "open invitation" to let it be known to all potential donors that this so called "charity" does not actually help victims of disaster.

As for "if they choose to go after me", any entry level attorney will tell you that you cannot sue for "defamation" if what is written is the truth.  They lied to me about the assistance I was QUALIFIED to receive, as a victim of a personal disaster.  Shows how much you know.

Now please go be a mattress stain someplace else.  Anybody who has nothing better to do than try and kick disaster victims while they're down, is exactly that-- a mattress stain.  One with very poor grammar and spelling, to boot.

If this commenter represents the Red Cross

AUTHOR: - ()

Does the above commenter represent the Red Cross?  I wouldn't be surprised.  All take note of this, and NEVER donate to this self professed charity.  Please, continue to prove how "helpful" they are.

Sorry to say this but YOU dont have a leg to stand on when it comes to complaining. ITS CHARITY! And THEY are within thier rights to give YOU NOTHING if they have so chosen. YOU cant WHINE that YOU didnt recieve CHARITY! All YOU are doing is showing that YOU as a functioning adult (supposedly) CANNOT pick up where you left off after a disaster. RED CROSS is SHORT TERM HELP! Its meant to help you START getting back on your feet. Obviously YOU had some place to go or it wouldnt have taken YOU over 30 days to get a place! YOU are just mad that YOU didnt get FREE MONEY! Get over it and put your life back together. I know how a home fire destroys everything having been through one. It doesnt give YOU a open inventation to defame them on a public forum. If they chose to go after YOU for what YOU have willingly posted, well YOUR money will go to help OTHER ppl who have been put out because of a fire. NOTHING you do online is anonymous. SO with VERY LITTLE EFFORT the red cross CAN find out EXACTLY who you are. How do you think thats going to effect YOUR chances if YOU need to use them again?? Kinda short sighted of YOU to go blasting the very same people YOU WANT FREE MONEY FROM! NOT VERY WISE! But really NOT surprising. Its the TYPICAL self entitlement that ALL Americans have. TYPICAL RESPONSES. BOO h*o life isnt FAIR! I DESERVE! There is local and state help for you and also federal assistance. If YOU are WAITING for a call then YOU are doing something WRONG! YOU cannot hold THEM accountable for NOT getting back to YOU. There are MANY MANY other ppl out there who are going through the EXACT same thing YOU are. What makes YOU think that the RED CROSS has ONLY you as a client? YOU are just one of MANY PPL who are hitting up the RED CROSS after a PERSONAL disaster. Move on, there are worse situations that you could be in.
