On August 27, 2007, I purchased a remanufactured engine for a 1984 Cadillac Seville from Remanufactured.com.  I also purchased a 3 year 36,000 parts and labor warranty on the engine.  The cost of the engine, the warranty, core charge and shipping totaled $2375.00  It arrive almost 2 months later, after several delays.  While restoring the car, my mechanic took his time, ordering new parts when possible from GM.  This process continued throughout 2008.  In early 2009, I started driving the vehicle short trips to break in the new engine.  After only twenty-five (25) miles, the engine developed a knocking sound.  I hired a second mechanic to check on the problem.  One of the steel sleeves had slipped loose and a rod and bearing had broken.  Basically, the engine failed.  In addition to the failed engine, I never received a refund of the core charge of $300 for the old engine that I returned to remanufactured.com on 3/31/09, and they received on 4/6/09.  I have made numerous attempts to contact the company by email and telephone, with no response and no satisfaction.  I am now requesting a refund of my original purchase price of $2375.00, at which time, I will return the engine purchased from Remanufactured.com

I never heard of this company either...

..but the report got me curious as well. They do have some complaints on several complaint websites. Perhaps hundreds and hundreds may be exagerating a bit..but when I checked the BBB site..they had quite a bit more then 3 complaints. And they have an F rating on a scale from A+ to F. So maybe this complaint has some merit.

Copied off the BBB website...

BBB Rating for Remanufactured.com

Based on BBB files, Remanufactured.com has a BBB Rating of F on a scale from A+ to F.

Reasons for this rating include:

  • 82 complaints filed against business
  • Failure to respond to 17 complaints filed against business.
  • 12 complaints filed against business that were not resolved.
  • BBB does not have sufficient background information on this business.
  • Business has failed to resolve underlying cause(s) of a pattern of complaints.

Now You Have Me Curious

I'm not seeing hundreds of complaints against them... anywhere. I'm in the business, and this is the first time I've even heard of them. They have 3 complaints with the BBB in the last 36 months though, apparently.

Where are you getting "hundreds" of complaints from?

Clarification

AUTHOR: John - (United States of America)

Even though it was over a year , I called Remanufactured.com and spoke to a Mike. He clearly stated that it was no problem to send in the core and they would go ahead and do the refund of 300.00  . If I thought I would not have gotten the refund I would have just sold the block for scrap. Because following the return of the block to Remanufactued.com I received a bill from Central Transport Shipping. ( The company picking up the block that I had pre-paid to ship back already)  They had not been paid for hundreds of Engine blocks being returned to Remanufactued.com and were trying to bill back customers of Remanufactured.com to recoop their losses.  Apparently Remanufactured.com was not paying any of its pre paid shipping bills, money I had already given them when the engine was ordered.

As for the rod, it was not blown,  I babied that car for 25 miles , never going over 45mph to break in the new engine.  What happened according to my mechanic was the stainless steel sleeve slipped out and the rod snapped off at the bearing.  All of these parts were part of the "rebuild" by Remanufactured.com

Why would I spend thousands rebuilding this older car and abuse it right out of the garage? Your logic makes no sense. I'm in my 40/s man, not my teens.  Please read the hundreds upon hundreds of complaints about Remanufactured.com  . Then I believe you would understand.  And if the 300.00 core charge was all i lost..No biggie....its the fact the engine failed so quickly. And is indeed still under the warranty I paid for. Yet the company will not respond to me after numerous attempts.  As a business owner of 21 years...If I did business like this...I would not be in business today.  Hopes this clears up some of your questions. PS. I am not a mechanic, just relying on my mechanics advice.

Thanks again,

 John

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Believable but not Probable

You bought the engine in 2007 and returned the core in 2009?! No company that I am aware of (I'm talking the big, legitimate remanufacturers) will issue core credit after 15 or 30 days. You're breaking their production cycle by returning it late - they've already had to purchase a core from a junk yard to maintain their stock levels at around 45 days.

Further, you threw a rod? That's almost always indicative of abuse, and will void just about anyone's warranty. If an engine knocks because it is defective, it will typically knock before it leaves the shop.

I'm not calling you a liar - your story isn't impossible, just rare.

But you are wrong to expect a core refund past 30 days from ANYONE.
