Judges in a family court are supposed to be, well ... judicious. They’re supposed to listen to the evidence presented to them from both sides of a conflict and make a decision based on cold, hard facts and the law. They sit in judgement and proclaim, in essence, “this is right,” and “this is wrong.”

Judicious is the right word. Weigh the facts, understand the law, make your decision. So how do you think that would apply to someone who as recently as last year underwent a home foreclosure? And what if this same someone married another someone who they knew had filed for bankruptcy? Not just once, but twice.

Would you say they were judicious in the use of their finances? Would you say they made sound, wise decisions in surrendering a home to foreclosure or themselves to a spouse who had two past bankruptcies?

Remember, now, we’re talking about someone who was and has always been gainfully employed. And who was engaged in work inside the courts. We’re talking about a candidate for an elected judicial office here. Someone who represents the law. We’re talking about Rena G. Hughes, who’s running to be elected a family court judge under the mantra of, “It’s time to restore Confidence in Family Court.”

Really? Confidence? Does someone who was fully, gainfully employed at a very high level (with an advanced degree –  a J.D., or Doctor of Jurisprudence – and a high earner) and who allowed their home to be foreclosed on infuse you with a high level of confidence in their decision-making capacity? Is that indicative of someone who makes sound decisions? Does someone in that sort of position who married someone who had been through two bankruptcies foster trust in making the right call on a family matter?

I don’t know about you, but if I were sitting in family court and knew that this was the kind of person on the bench, I’d ask – no, demand – that person recuse herself from the bench and from sitting in decision on the case I was involved with. I would demand that they step down and that another judge be allowed to take over. I would not trust them to make a sound decision about my life or my family’s life based on the poor decisions they make, for which there is clear evidence. I would judge them incompetent

And now Rena G. Hughes wants you to elect her to be a family court judge of the Eighth Judicial District Court. No way. What a joke! Do not do this to yourselves, citizens!.
