In 2012, I had rhino shield paint my house. Before allowing them, I had asked to see a customer's house and ask for a reference that I could talk to. During the painting, I found out the house they sent me to was one of the owners and the reference was one of the painter's mother. I was a bit taken aback, but I figured the job had a warranty for 25 years so it would be most likely worth the money. Also, they had claimed to have discounted the price almost 9000 dollars for me. They had started much higher and dropped the price when I said it was way too much. It was over 8 times what I had paid two years earlier to paint! When they applied the product, half of my house was stripped to bare wood the other was still fully painted. I questioned them since during their initial presentation they stressed the importance of the application process and proper preparation. I asked several times if this would cause product failure and the foreman assured me, it would be fine and we had a warranty so if there was a problem, it would be fixed. Late fall 2014, I noticed peeling of the dormers, I called and was informed to call in spring. In the spring, I called and by then, the paint had peeled significantly. They asked for pictures so I sent pictures. They said they could not tell from the pictures so they needed to send someone out. The person came out and said that it was covered by warranty and did I have any other areas. I said not that I know of but I had a window replaced and had a few more getting done and those trim boards and surrounding shingles would need to be done. He said I should wait till those got done to save me money since the non warranty work could be done at the same time as the warranty work. I called when the windows were done and they said I owed them $250 dollars for the inspection. They said the inspection fee is only waived for warranty work and since I had non warranty work, I owed it. I was very upset. The reason they came out was for warranty work but since I mentioned the windows, they were going to sock me with a fee. I should have known then they were rip off artist! I begrudgingly paid the fee, and was promised I would have an estimate for the non warranty work within a few days. Weeks later still no estimate, so I called again. They claimed to be very busy and would get back to me. They, in the meantime, said they would send someone out to my house again. I said I absolutely would not pay another $250. The person who came out the last time should have gathered the information to give me the estimate. I called over a week later looking for an estimate and now they tried to tell me I have a lot of rot on the back of my house that was discovered the second time someone came to my house and they can not paint over that. I asked why that was not found on the initial visit and where this rot was. She kept saying, I do not know on the back of your house. I asked for pictures of where since all the windows on "the back of my house were replaced. And I wanted my contractor to verify. They never sent pictures. I called again since now it was fall and the painting season was slipping away. Finally, they gave me a verbal estimate of 1200 dollars. I was shocked it was so much. Again they claimed I was getting a discount and was only paying the labor of the non warranty work and they were picking up the cost of the product. I had only a few dozen shingles and trim boards for 6 windows. I said it was too much, just do warranty work. They dropped the price to $800. I said no, just do warranty work and now all of a sudden they claim none of the work is covered by warranty. They did not even call to inform me of this, they sent a "cc" text between two employees who were apparently discussing the issue. It is a total bogus warranty. They make you pay inspection fees and then claim everything is not covered because of rot. Well, when they painted the house in August of 2012, there was no rot. They do not paint over rot. They have made that point very clear. Their own words, how is there rot now if it was properly protected with their product and why can they not provide pictures of the so called rot so my contractor can verify. We have a whole house dehumidifier so that the inside and basement stay dry. Do not waste your money on Rhino-Shield. You will still be paying to paint. This Old House also states it is not worth the money. Don't be fooled and pay 4-5 times what you normally would pay to paint your house because you think you will get 25 years out of it. the warranty and only as good as the company giving it. They have no intention of backing it up. I guess I should be grateful I got two years, now that I have been doing research online about rhino shield another poor family got two days. They at least held out for a lot better price though. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND PAINT CONVENTIONALLY!

Rhinoshield is a rip off, Steer clear!!!! You will Regret it, if you go with them!

AUTHOR: Audra - (United States)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 15, 2017

I have proof of everything I put in my report.  I even have a letter from Rhinoshield saying that there was warranty work that was covered.  But as I stated before, their tune changed as soon as I would not get the additional work done that I would have to pay for.  They refused to do the warranty work and claimed there was none.  They even tried to drop there price quote for the additional work to persuade me to do it.  There are reports all over the internet about what a ripoff Rhinoshield is and how bogus the warranty is.  I had a professional painter tell me it was product failure and I had a builder and the painter also verify there was no rot on my house.  Rhinoshield claimed rot so they can get out of of the warrenty.  Plain and simple.  The builder, who could had made money off me if there was rot, said there was not any rot.  So I have to assume he was not the one lying.  Also, the painter I hired confirmed his observations.  So who do we believe, the company trying to get out of the life time warranty or the people who could have made a little money off me, but chose not to lie and rip me off.  You be the Judge.

Factual Response

AUTHOR: Office - (USA)

POSTED: Saturday, May 06, 2017

This is a truly unjust post, a terrible website that feeds off lies and profit. We hate to feed into this but it requires a response.

Respectfully we tried everything we could to satisfy this overly demanding customer.

Per the terms of the signed contract, we were contracted to provide conventional prep / no stripping followed by the Rhino Shield coating to the home.  Upon review of the project Rhino Shield management decided that the older part of the home needed an application of chemical stripper applied to remove older paint that was improperly bonded to the home.  This was done at the company’s expense to ensure proper application of our product and set the job up for success. The other part of the home was newer and didn't need chemical strip. The normal response from a customer when you go above and beyond would be "thank you for taking pride in your work, honoring your contract price and not charging me for the additional work" This customers instinct is to put us in a bad light / slander us as she wanted more for free and this was the ongoing theme during the entire project.

Customer stated we only primed the chemical stripped areas. That's correct you prime raw wood the other part of the house wouldn't need that primer as it was painted wood. That is painting 101.

Customer states reference was painters mother. Painters mother doesn't live in New England that's not true.

After completion and final payment was required. There was no payment as customer had small issues she wanted corrected. After multiple small touch ups, trips back and forth to the house, and many phone calls and a demand letter for final payment the customer agreed the house looks great and paid us 2 months after it was essentially complete.

Upon final payment customer stated she could be used a reference, she would even be willing to talk to customers everything worked out well “went from picky to happy”.

After 3yrs of being a 100% satisfied customer as everyone in New England knows we had the worst winter on record, a service was called in. The service call was like dozens of other services we received from, ice damage / roof trim damage. Most cutomers had insurance claims, there was no insurance involved on this service call. Service work required the homeowner to have roof dormer trim boards replaced with new wood and recoated with Rhino Shield. This of course was no fault of our own but the customer did not see it that way. We offered to work with the customer for over the course of the season dozens of emails and prices (essentially pricing it at our cost just to get it completed and closed out) we could not come to any resolution unless we would work for free.

The customer states that This Old House doesn't recommend our company. This is 100% slander and is untrue. We were featured on the 30th anniversary show and it re-airs every year. This statement by the customer should really show you the character of the person and how she is trying to inflict damage to our reputation. The episode of This Old House is right on our website to view we are very proud of the relationship.

Regarding this whole unjust post the only way to get it removed on this less than reputable website is to pay them thousands of dollars which we refuse to do. If you contact the owner of this website he makes you sign a release to not sue him before he will even speak with you. Very reputable.

Doing business for the last 13 years, completing thousands of projects and always aiming to satisfy customers it is deplorable that one of our customers has gone onto this website to lie and bully our company in front of thousands of people. We are a small business with great employees that have built careers with us and are very proud of our reputation.

There has been ZERO fact checking by this website. Most all statements customer states completely contradict her contract and what she hired us to do and warranty.  We are considering legal action regarding this post as many interested customers have brought it to our attention.

Rhino Shield would be pleased to further talk to any future customer in regards to this situation.

Thank you for reading this far!
